I have just registered. I am 63 years old and just retired in September 2014. I joined the forum to read and discuss senior issues. One issue I am having is in health. I have developed weak legs. It is hard to get up from the floor after squatting down. What are some good exercises you do to help. Thank you for your input. dcc

Welcome DCC! If you don't have any physical injuries or other reasons for weak legs, then I think what you need to do is find some good exercises for your abilities. I workout a lot and for my legs specifically I do squats, lunges, use ankle weights to do leg lifts but I worked my way up to do all these. If joining a gym is an option for you, someone will be glad to offer good advice.

I might add, I am over weight, been a yo-yo dieter for the last 25 years. I am healthy otherwise. Thank you for your reply, I will start the squats, lunges, and leg lifts.

I've always been limber which helps, even when I've been 30 pounds overweight. I'm guilty of yo yo dieting as well. I gain when we travel, lose when we get home. I'm on the losing part now, again.

Welcome to the forum DCC, that's an excellent exercise that Ameriscot has suggested with the ankle weights. You can sit in your chair with them strapped to your ankles and just start off gently raising your straightened legs up and down a few times to strengthen your ankles, knees and thighs, eventually you should be able to do more every day.. it's certainly worth a try.. good luck!

They are excellent for knees. I also use them as floor exercises for bum and thighs. Squats and lunges must be done properly or you'll hurt your knees. When doing them your knees shouldn't not go past your feet. Youtube has many good videos on how to do every kind of exercise.

Well, I did have hip replacement surgery in 2005 and that, along with some extra weight (25), I most always have a hard time getting up off of the floor. I'm 65. From my past Senior Heathcare experience, people that are overweight, be it a little or a lot, can have a hard time getting up from being on the floor. Ankle and leg weight exercises can help, if you can handle doing them.

Some of us in this forum are big believers in fitness/exercises, while other are not or not so much of.

Good Luck and WELCOME to the forum. We get into some very interesting, and sometimes very debatable, subjects and replies.

Hi DCC, glad to see you've joined us here! I think a lot of us have some difficulty getting up from the floor in a kneeling or squatting position, I know I do. I often hold onto something or push off the floor. Walking, exercise biking, stair climbing are all good exercises to strengthen the legs. I don't do lunges or squats, because my knees so far have been okay and I don't want to injure them in my old age. Too many people of all ages walking around with knee pain and problems.

SB, properly done lunges and squats won't hurt your knees, but I've seen many doing them improperly. Easy to do them the wrong way as well. I do mine in front of a full length mirror just to make sure.
