Hi everyone. I just joined and am 60 years old. We live in the Chicago burbs. I am looking forward to a cruise to Alaska in June! Can't wait. Would love to talk about travel and politics and issues which have to do with Social Security and Medicare. I am disabled and my only income is from Social Security Disability. I have been freaking out because Congress is cutting disability payments by 20%. So, those are most of the issues for me. Oh, except my relationship with my daughter. It is terrible.
 

Welcome BeverlyB! I hadn`t heard that Social security Disability was cutting back on the benefits. How scary!
 

Social Security Disability

My Congressman, Bill Foster, called me on other issues, but I asked him how they could possibly be so cruel as to cut disability checks by 20%! He said that the Republicans, in charge of the House, put the cut into the "Rules" package. He said they did it that way so as to not be singled out as a congressman who was cutting social security disability.
 
Welcome to the forum Beverly! We did some tent camping in Alaska when we were younger, beautiful country, an Alaskan cruise will be awesome, enjoy! Just posted a thread on SS benefits in the news and hot topics forum.

Welcome Bev, I am so upset at the Republicans it's amazing. I do not depend on disability but I know so many do. Hopefully, it will not become law. Meanwhile enjoy our forum and it's members.
 
Thanks so much for the welcome, Jim. I was just reading a quote by Rand Paul and he said 50% of those on disability are frauds. I don't believe that statistic one bit. And even if it were true, what about the other 50% of us who are disabled? :)
 
Welcome, Beverly. I spent my growing up years in rural Woodstock, Illinois, 60 miles northwest of Chicago. I depend on Social Security too, but just received a $25 monthly increase for 2015. That pays my basic dial-up internet bill! Hooray! I have had a lifelong interest in politics, but for the past few years, I have been so disgusted with the Republicans that I try to avoid listening to media coverage except for National Public Radio.
 
Thanks so much for the welcome, Dr. Porter. But, you know, if the Republicans had their way, there would be no NPR!! I was just reading a political analysis from MSNBC, and it looks like Hillary will be it for us, which bums me out just a little bit because I love Elizabeth Warren!

I love Elizabeth Warren too, but I want her to get some solid Senate experience before she runs for POTUS. I hope Hillary can be elected this next time. We need a woman president.
 
I'm stubborn! I still really want Liz! I used to work for her husband when he was teaching law in St. Louis. But, I will definitely support Hillary, and now there is no doubt that she's going to run since she hired John Pedestal. :sentimental:
