After more than 100 days without any community spread of COVID-19, New Zealand moved to an elevated alert level Wednesday with news of four new cases and another four probable ones.

The country had returned to normal life, but the mystery of the new outbreak's source has led to increased restrictions and concern in the island nation.

The first four cases are members of the same family in the city of Auckland. The new probable cases — based on symptoms but still awaiting test results — are linked to the cases in the Auckland family.

Sorry to hear this! One "good" thing that may come out of it is that it might make it easier to trace the epidemiology; i.e., how it spreads.

What impresses me most about this story is how swiftly the NZ government responded with shut-downs. They're obviously very serious about containing this virus.

I have a friend who lives here half the year, in New Zealand the other half. She's here now (probably wishes she weren't.) She told me she was very impressed with how the NZ government handled the disease when it started there. They were adult, professional, serious about their reaction, and it had almost instant results. None of the childish squabbling that goes on here.
