New Restrictions in Many California Counties

Awkward is my Superpower
Los Angeles and many other CA counties have bounced into greater restrictions today because of strained ICU capacity. LA now has only roughly 10% of its ICU beds free. Given that during five of the last six days the number of new positive test results have broken records, including 10,528 yesterday alone, and 10% of positive cases typically end up hospitalized, the next few weeks could be bleak indeed for already stressed medical services.

"The stay-at-home order will be in place for three weeks and will bar gatherings of people from different households. Regions will be eligible to exit from the order on Dec. 28 if ICU capacity projections for the following month are above or equal to 15%.

Under the order, the following businesses/recreational facilities will be forced to close:

  • Indoor and outdoor playgrounds;
  • Indoor recreational facilities;
  • Hair salons and barbershops;
  • Personal care services;
  • Museums, zoos, and aquariums;
  • Movie theaters;
  • Wineries;
  • Bars, breweries and distilleries;
  • Family entertainment centers;
  • Card rooms and satellite wagering;
  • Limited services;
  • Live audience sports; and
  • Amusement parks.

Schools with waivers will be allowed to remain open, along with “critical infrastructure” and retail stores, which will be limited to 20% of capacity. Restaurants will be restricted to takeout and delivery service only. Hotels would be allowed to open “for critical infrastructure support only,” while churches would be restricted to outdoor only services. Entertainment production — including professional sports — would be allowed to continue without live audiences."

I'm in California but I don't think this is in my area yet. I'm only doing necessary shopping at this time. I'd love to stop by our animal benefit thrift store but I'm not going to. I can wait. If I want/need any books or anything I'll order online.

And sheriff's & police department have already said they will not enforce it.

Although we just came out of lockdown again a few days ago..they're already suggesting London will go into ''Tier 3'' a higher lockdown before Christmas because of this type of madness in the city centre at the weekend

I'll be surprised if there aren't several major cities that go into lockdown by mid to late January. The holiday gatherings are going to push many hospitals over their limits. I just hope the infection rate among doctors and nurses stays low....or we will be in some really serious trouble. it seems as if half the populations are failing to take this virus seriously.

@hollydolly, that photo is nothing short of astonishing. What are they thinking?
I know, it's just beyond belief isn't it?.. the trouble is of course that they then potentially bring it back out here to the suburbs and the countryside.. where we've all been being as careful as we could be... , and we end up being locked down again due to their selfishness

That's pretty much the same as we have up here in the bay area but wineries and breweries are able to process to go orders and shipments at the curb. I think a number of wineries have created "tasting kits" for purchase.

Holly, that looks like the same crowd in a picture you posted last summer, all of them scrunched together on the beach. Most of this crowd appear to be without masks, still in denial that there's anything to worry about? What is wrong with these people?

It's obvious that in America, cooperation in fighting the disease is often along political lines. Is the same true in Britain?

Yes I'm sure many of these people are some of those who spent the summer on many of our beaches during our months of lockdown..which of course was one of the reasons IMO why we had to have yet another lockdown by the beginning of November until a few days ago..

Oh yes for sure.. Political infighting is a lot to do with many people ignoring the rules, and of course the young who think they're indepsensible and immune from the disease albeit carriers.. and who don't care in fact some are actively trying to actively pass it onto elder people who they seem to think have stolen their future..(us)... ..and although I could go on at great length about this, I won't due to the political element rule here on this forum... but suffice it to say we not only have anti-vaxxers in their hundreds of thousands.. we also have Covid-19 deniers, also in their hundreds of thousands, and while this goes on and the police refuse to take any kind of serious action, it will never go away, until everyone is vaccinated

Now that's what I call "Social Distancing!"

(I didn't say how much distance.....)

I know it's not funny, but you do have to have a wry laugh at how many people think the pandemic doesn't apply to them .. and of course that's just ONE street in One City in the UK ..it's happening in many places in this country, and those people who have obeyed all the rules, are feeling rightly cheated

I do understand it, ( But I certainly don't condone it) people are feeling locked in, we;ve had 9 months now.. . people are fed up not being able to shop, go to the gym or leisure centres ( until last week).. and usually millions would be out of the country at any one time, travelling... but everyone is here.. and there's nothing to do but shop... ..and bear in mind as well this is without our usual millions of tourists which we have at Christmas... it's pretty scary.

I understand the frustration, and I feel it, too. But disregarding the restrictions and safety recommendations/requirements is only going to make the situation worse and make it last even longer. I don't understand why people don't get that.

Here where I live, we had been doing very well until many of the more severe restrictions were lifted. Then idiots decided it was OK to disregard all of them, and cases went WAY up and we are back at square one again.

I fear it's not going to get much better until the vaccines are distributed and have time to take effect -- sometime middle or late next year.
