I've read three of Shute's novels - a Town Like Alice, On the Beach and In the Wet. They are all a bit outdated now, especially the last mentioned but it is very interesting. Shute was a patriot and a monarchist. He talked about a voting system where people became entitled to additional votes according to their contributions to the country, up to a total of 7 votes for some. He believed that this would lead to a more conservative form of government. I gather he didn't approve of the British or Australian Labor parties or unions.
