New York City Still Loyal to the British?

Paladin1950

Still love 50's & 60's music!
Even though we got our independence from Great Britain, there is a borough in New York City called Queens. It's located in Queens County. Another borough Brooklyn, is located in Kings County. So even though we got our independence from the British, there are Kings and Queens in New York City.

The Kennedy Memorial Trust was set up by an Act of Parliament in 1964 as a living memorial to President Kennedy following his tragic assassination.
For the past six decades, the Kennedy Scholarships have supported exceptional British students to pursue postgraduate studies at Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Kennedy Scholars embody the values President Kennedy championed: intellectual endeavour, leadership, and public service. They carry forward a vision of the future he did not live to see.

The National Memorial at Runnymede, Surrey, is open to the public and situated above the meadow where the Magna Carta was sealed in June 1215.. Inscribed with words taken from his inaugural address in 1961, it commemorates his dedication to the enduring principles of democracy and freedom.

Magna Carta was the first document to put into writing the principle that the king and his government was not above the law. It sought to prevent the king from exploiting his power, and placed limits of royal authority by establishing law as a power in itself.

He was the brother of Kathleen Kennedy who was Duchess of Devonshire I think?
When her father was serving as U.S. Ambassador to the United Kingdom, she began a romantic relationship with Lord Hartington, whom she married in May 1944. He was killed on active service in Belgium only four months later. Kathleen died in a plane crash in 1948.
The tragedies that family suffered.

I grew up in a southern household in Queens. My father was from North Carolina , my mother was born in Tennesee and grew up in South Carolina. I have not been up to Queens in decades.

There are tons of cities with names from the UK mother country. Just as there are tons of cities with the names of various saints. Los Angeles (Home of the World Champion Dodgers!!!) was originally called El Pueblo de Nuestra Señora la Reina de los Ángeles - The City of Our Lady the Queen of the Angels. Few, if any, people seem to be bothered about any of this.

^^ also Queenstown in Tasmania, Kings canyon in NT (although I think that has been given an Aboriginal name now) probably many more that I can't think of right now

But of course there are many places in Australia with names of various origins

The entire northeastern part of the country is called New England!
Boston is New England's largest city and the capital of Massachusetts. It is the birthplace of the American Revolution and where it’s basically "All Your Fault if you’re British." Or, technically I suppose, "English." It’s generally our fault. The Scots and Welsh can usually be absolved from any disastrous British decisions regarding foreign relations and nationhood.

Boston is also the place where they unceremoniously dumped British shipped tea in the harbour to protest against unfair taxation. (That's not the proper way to make tea). Later, the local patriots ran the British out of town in 1776.

Yet despite that, little has changed since the 18th century. It is still just a little bit British in character.

This is Boston UK............And this is Boston USA.
In Boston USA there's a three mile route, marked in revolutionary red on the sidewalks, where you will see every important site where the British got their asses kicked. The Massachusetts Spy, was printed in a nearby building during the 1770's, fifty years later an enterprising entrepreneur added an oyster bar and turned the building into a restaurant, the Union Oyster House, now deemed to be America’s oldest continuously operating restaurant. It is said that JFK had his own personal wood-panelled booth there, where he sat and enjoyed oysters on ice and a glass of Boston beer.
