New Zealand Shootings

Just read it, such a tragedy, R.I.P...

.. shocking and so sad to have one of the last bastions of the western world relatively untouched by terrorism, now because of one man, going to be living in fear of more attacks..

40 dead, 48 seriously injured!!

Warning..... here in the Mail.. the report shows the gunman filming himself driving to carry out the killings

I read the article and was dismayed to read that he was an admirer of Candace Owens ?? and our sitting president. Wonder if he got"ginned up" on some of the political rally rhetoric? I wish he could have been inspired by some other world leader rather than ours. :(

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard “I never thought that would happen here.”

Terrible tragedy, hate and racism is alive and well in all countries throughout the world. Rest in peace to all who lost their lives, sympathy to the survivors. :(

Let's see if New Zealand actually does anything to try to prevent this atrocity from happening again. Unlike in the US, when we have the standard "thoughts and prayers" speeches, as we bury the dead. Then we're off to the next tweet,

Like most these mass shootings this just didn't happen over night. These murderers were concocting, planning, rationalizing and/or getting motivated for a while. With a 'manifesto' there is no one cause other than a severe case of narcissism-'This is why 'I' did it'

RIP victims, condolences to friends and family.

There are reports that the murderer traveled internationally over the last few years? To top it off the perpetrator is Australian and not from New Zealand?

Apparently their manifesto is over 70 pages long and rants about a bunch of things. Some contradictory. Seems like a self absorbed anarchist.

And I deplore the fact that he is an Australian.

Australians and New Zealanders are like cousins and there is visa-less passage between our two countries. We know little about this man except that red flags were flying before he began shooting but he was not on any watch list. My suspicions are that because he is white and not an immigrant to Australasia the authorities were not alert to his obvious radicalisation.

Various political leaders and prominent celebrities have contributed to an atmosphere of fear and hatred of Muslims and people of colour. White supremacist rhetoric needs to be answered and the authorities need to be taking note of the activities of the leaders.

The American president is no more to blame than other leaders who have used xenophobia to win votes. Australia has more than its share of these people in our parliament. They have to stop using the word invasion when referring to asylum seekers. Words can become weapons against innocent people when they lodge in the wrong heads.

An alleged racist Australian senator egged over immigration-

There is no 'alleged' about it. Anning is campaigning on a racist platform.

For Christchurch

It is heartbreaking. There are not enough words to express my sadness at this event. 50 dead, 50 wounded.

Officials talk and talk and talk, but do nothing. The mass shootings will never end and that is the greatness sadness of all.

The death toll in Christchurch is worse than Port Arthur and also Dunblane. I do not think the New Zealanders will just sit back and do nothing after this. Semi automatic long guns are not prohibited in NZ and while they are licensed, they are not required to be registered and the number of such weapons that can be possessed is not limited. IMO these things will be seriously looked at and changes will be made.

This is possible in Commonwealth countries because there is no assumption that ownership of firearms is a right. However, guns are only part of the problem. It is time to look carefully at the role of social media, hate speech and associated rallies, what is takes to begin surveillance of people who seem to be dangerous because of their ideology and that includes white supremacists as well as radical Islam. The dark web needs to have light shone into it too. All sorts of vileness lurks there, including child sexual abuse groups.

The NZ Prime Minister has been on the news stating that she is going to begin to get gun laws substantially changed in NZ. And...just like here when a mass shooting occurs, and politicians start talking about restricting gun sales...there are already reports about gun sales in NZ increasing substantially, as people buy guns before the laws change.

That won't help them if semi automatic long guns are declared illegal.
There may be a buy back and an amnesty period but they will not be allowed to keep them if they are prohibited.
