New Zealand Shootings

And now another one in Utrecht, Holland. It's becoming almost a daily event.

I was wondering why the face of the New Zealand terrorist was blurred out on the news channels, as if they were protecting this killer, anybody know why? I did see one photo on a website that was supposed to be him.

SeaBreeze,

Is is my understanding they don't want to give him the "fame" he is seeking. Lots of times they don't mention the name either.

Jacinta Ardern has announced that in 10 days time she will announce what action she intends to take. She is also demanding to know why he wasn't on a watch list and how this omission can be avoided in future.

In Australia there has been a push to water down our gun laws and we now have as many guns as were in circulation back before Port Arthur, around 3 million. I doubt that the Shooters and Fishers Party will get many votes at next Saturday's NSW (state) election this time. The people on the whole don't want to see something like this happen in Australia ever again. Currently semi automatic hand guns are prohibited.

I heard on the news that the New Zealand Prime Minister says she will never use the terrorist's name, not wanting to give him the "fame" he is seeking.

Are we seeing these events more as typical now days? Not typical overseas but here in the US it is just more rounds fired. I want to see the U.S. reaction if New Zealand passes a law banning semiauto weapons with one swift move while here nothing changes even after slaughtering our little children at Sandy Hook.

It is done.

CHRISTCHURCH, New Zealand (AP) -- New Zealand prime minister announces immediate ban on all assault weapons, "military-style semi-automatic weapons"

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2019-03-21/nz-military-style-semi-automatic-weapons-ban/10923760

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has announced a plan to ban military-style semi-automatic weapons and assault rifles in the wake of a terrorist attack that killed 50 people in Christchurch.
Ms Ardern said the ban would also apply to high-capacity magazines, all parts with the ability to convert firearms into semi-automatic-style weapons and parts that cause "close to automatic gunfire".

She said the law would be in place by April 11, at the end of the next two-week sitting session.
"In short, every semi-automatic weapon used in the terrorist attack on Friday will be banned in this country," she said.
While the legislation is being prepared, immediate changes to licensing regulations will restrict the purchase of the weapons.
She said no-one would be able to buy the weapons from now without a permit from the police, but added there was "no point in applying for such a permit".

"This is an interim measure to ensure the trade of these weapons ceases from 3:00pm today."

The Prime Minister said the Government would introduce a buyback scheme to ensure "fair and reasonable compensation" was paid to owners of the weapons. She expected the program could cost the country between $NZ100 million ($96 million) and $NZ200 million ($192 million).
Ms Ardern said there would be an amnesty period after the legislation passed, allowing people a reasonable amount of time to hand back their weapons.

She said she did not want to punish owners who used their guns for legitimate reasons.
"I have been steadfast in my belief that the vast majority of these owners will support what we are doing here today because it is about all of us," she said. "It is in the national interest and it is about safety.

"I will work hard to retain that support as we work on the remaining tranches of reform that we must make to prevent an act of terror happening in our country ever again."

New Zealand Police Minister Stuart Nash said it was important the Government made the decision to ban the weapons.

"These measures will make a real difference to enable New Zealand to become a safer place," he said.
"As the Prime Minister has already said, the time to act is now."

The act of one man changes the law for all?! If Australia could weigh in they would tell thenm beware of a measure like this from the government. Gun ownership now in Austraila is next to impossible. Sad. Is New Zealand a democracy or a dictatorship?

That's what you call sad? Now, that is truly sad!

Well then, let's take away & ban all cars. Cars kill more people each year than guns. And using the logic of the anti-gun folks, they are one in the same. Merely an instrument used , and in the hands of the wrong PERSON at the wrong time.

Those who know a little history understand just how dangerous it truly is when a government starts taking away the people's ability to protect themselves. If just one or two of the people in that mosque had been carrying firearms the outcome might have been much different. Life is dangerous ... knee-jerk reactions are generally unhelpful.

Funny you should mention that. Gun ownership in Australia next to impossible? At last reckoning there are 3 million legally owned firearms in Australia (pop 25 million). The highest number owned by an individual, not a dealer or collector, is around 300.

New Zealand, like Australia, is a parliamentary democracy. If the people don't like what the government has done, they can vote them out and reverse the law, however this measure in NZ, which is not to ban all guns, just those designed to kill many victims in as little time as possible, is popular with the Kiwis. People are already voluntarily coming forward to surrender their semi automatic weapons.

[h=2]What are the ownership trends?[/h]
Australians now own more guns in total than they did before the 1996 crackdown, according to figures from 2016 - the last time they were comprehensively studied. That amounts to more than three million firearms, according to separate government statistics. But gun ownership per capita has dropped by 23% during the same time, said Associate Prof Philip Alpers from the University of Sydney."Far fewer people now have a gun in their home but some people have a lot more guns," Associate Prof Philip Alpers told the BBC.

Per capita figures have dropped because the population is increasing, largely because of immigration.

In my Sydney electorate I have discovered that there number of guns in private hands is more than 2000 and less than 5000. The adult population is about 90,000. Let's assume a number midway between 2000 and 5000, say 3500. The rate of gun ownership per adult comes out to be just under 4 per hundred adults or 1 per 25. So for every person with a gun, there are 24 without one. Sounds pretty close to the mark. Personally I don't know a single person who owns a gun.

What is important is that military style firearms and guns that can be modified to approximate them are not available to civilians.

Such a terrible tragedy. Hatred and violence is rampant in our world and it's frightening and disgusting. That Muslims, Jews and Christians cannot be safe in their respective houses of worship is appalling! I read that the Imam of the mosque forgave the man and has love for him. I am Muslim and I know we are supposed to forgive but I don't know if I could under these circumstances. So many lives....even children. :sorrow:
