News I can't keep up with what they're saying, too fast

I find that when I listen to and watch the news each night, that I cannot keep up. The newsreaders leap so quickly from topic to topic without pausing in between . Do any of you have trouble keeping up, or is it my lack of concentration?




 

Yes, I do a bit unless I am concentrating fully with eyes and ears.

I also find it bizarre that they go from a headline about a lottery win to a major catastrophe without a pause or change of voice tone.
 
I hate when the 5PM news gives a tidbit of a story and says more at 6PM!!!!! ��
 

I feel the same and some stories don't give you the who, what, where and why, in their reporting.. :confused:

But to me it seems ( caution, mini rant ahead.. :eek:) like I'm just watching commercials with a bit of news thrown in, with the same weather forecast over and over again..
 
I watch the evening news, and note any topics that seem of interest...then I go to the Internet and do more research. At least on the Net, I don't have to sit through endless "Ask Your Doctor" drug commercials.
 
I've always heard dead air or nothing being said is a major no no in tv & radio since airtime is so expensive. That could be part of the issue along with some compressed broadcasts speeding up the video and raising the volume. Also many in the industry know they only have so much time to get their message/words out. Thrown in some perky personalities it's off to the races
 
There is one particular weather reporter in my area that I have a problem following. I'm usually looking for what the immediate weather is and the likely hood I might get wet taking the dog out for an hour or so walk. I figured out what the main problem was... she doesn't pause between subjects when giving the forecast. Listening to her is akin to reading some article with run on sentences and/or without paragraphs that break things up such that I can take the info in in bite size increments.

On a side note. I listen to and also read along with books on Audible. There is a feature that allows you to speed up or slow down the speech. If I am listening only I like it at x1 to x1.25 speed but if I am reading along with it that seems soooo slow and I adjust it to x1.5 or higher, usually x2, but occasionally a little higher than that. It depends on the speech characteristics of the reader as well as the subject matter.
 
I also have problems occasionally. Some of them apparently do speed reading and talk equally as fast. I sometimes rely on reading it as well.
 
I can watch/listen to the news and weather on television while reading or typing on my laptop... and never miss a thing. What messes me up, though, is when I'm zoned in on both and this lovely lady sitting across the room... my wife... pops up with some question out of the clear blue. "Honey, is it raining in Timbuckto?" "Honey, what year did we go see the Beach Boys?" "Honey, how long does it take to drive to Minnesota?" Just questions out of nowhere that blow your concentrations on both what you are reading and what you are listening to. But... I do love her!!!!!

Had the same problem until we got "Alexa" (echo dot) now she answers our questions..marchmellow.gif

I hear you. I watched Kellyanne Conway (Trump's mindless mouthpiece) endlessly babbling through a ten minute interview where the host had to yell just to comment.
