Nice Neighbor, but…….

Been There

This morning after I woke up and opened the blind nearest my bed, I noticed we had a light frost last night. I lived in NE Ohio for my first 9 years with my parents and we got frost up there sometimes in September. Here in Northern Virginia, this is about the right time to get our first frost. This morning after I went downstairs in my robe and slippers and opened the door, there was no paper. I figured we may have a new or replaced paperboy. A lady was jogging past and yelled, “Np paper either?” I yelled back no and went back inside and closed the door.

Fifteen minutes later, the doorbell rang and when I opened it, the woman was standing there with my paper and said that the paperboy just went. While I was waiting for the paper, I put on a pot of coffee, so when I opened the door she must have smelled it because she said she loves the smell of fresh brewed coffee. To be neighborly, I invited her in for a cup and she accepted. I also had some Sara Lee coffee cakes, so I set those out as well.

After an hour, she was still talking, so I told her that I had an appointment at 10, which I did and I had to get cleaned up. She said that she had to leave anyway, but she continued on for another 25 minutes. I was just wondering if there was a way to end a conversation without offending anyone? I kind of liked her and also enjoyed the stories, so I don’t want to push her away. Any ideas on how to shorten the conversation without harming the relationship?
I’m not quite sure where she lives or if she is married or has a partner. I’m not attracted to her, but did enjoy the company, if only it would have been a bit shorter. Suggestions?

She was actually roller blading. If I had to guess, I would say she was between 55-60. For me, I have a difficult time telling women's ages because of the makeup and this lady even had a diamond tennis bracelet on. Her stories were interesting, but she never gave away if she was married or had a partner and when I asked the neighbor next to me, she said that she never had seen her before either. I think about asking her out to dinner, but I need more background information. I don't want to embarrass myself by finding out she has a husband or a partner. No ring on her left hand, but she had a black ring on her right hand. Does that mean anything? The only thing she said about me or my house was how clean it was. I didn't tell her that the cleaning lady was there yesterday.

Backing up to the very beginning of this.
The first thing that came to my mind was .... are you the only one that didn't get a newspaper on your street this morning ? ... I would do a check with your neighbors that get papers, to see if things add up with her story.
Or check with the newspaper delivery company for an update on the delivery today.

Then, a woman roller blading past your house in the morning, wearing a diamond tennis bracelet .... conveniently being there to pick up your paper ... wanting to come in .... and then being vague about herself .... BE CAREFUL !

Get the missing information ....

Thank you for sharing your story. I’ve enjoyed reading it, as it’s most unusual, yet titillating at the same time.

Isn’t it interesting how an ordinary frosty morning evolves into something warm and extraordinary in a blink of an eye?

You seem to possess a keen mind for detail, in noticing important essentials that may or may not represent unstated “dealbreakers” for you regarding whether someone other is worthy of meeting certain criteria you deem valuable.

The woman’s kind action to deliver your paper, although assertive; is perhaps, a comfortable expression of her own free receptivity to engage with someone different, by her standards.

I think your neighborly action to invite her in, to stay for coffee, [and] coffee cake, mirrors a mutual longing you might both share in being sincere towards developing other friendship and companionship.

I love that the woman surveyed the cleanliness of your home, in swift, similar fashion, that you summarized her jewelry, and clothing attire — (two peas-in-a-pod… lol!)

Yet, walking on the side of caution is good. Baby steps in finding the answers you seek.

Finest of luck to you, and good hunting!

I would've put my right hand out to her left side, with my left hand directing the way to the door

Then say something like;
"Listen, I really do need to get going, but you're welcome to have coffee with me again sometime."

That sounds like a Minnesota good-bye. My husband usually nudges me to quit talking so we can leave.
I 'have' to interrupt my wife 'every' time! Doesn't matter if it is with family or a complete stranger, she gets to 'yappin' and she cannot stop, God Bless her sweet body! I think over the years, she just waits until I suggest to her "dear, we really have to get going"....and take her by the hand and drag her out...

When I was in college I went to a party hosted by a foreign student. A guy from India and his wife. It was fun, they served lots of Indian foods some really good, some too hot for me.

When the party was winding down as guests left she said "please come back when you can't stay so long". At the time I just assumed it was a language thing, but now I am not so sure, been tempted to use that line a time or two myself.

I never saw this woman until Saturday. I saw her again this morning, only this time she was walking her Husky. The dog is beautiful. This was at about 7:30 and I was just backing out of my garage when she waved at me and yelled something that I couldn’t make out what it was. When I got back at about 8:45, I saw my neighbor outside and he also saw this lady earlier. After I parked in the garage, I asked him if he knew her. He said he thinks she just moved into the neighborhood in back of us. Ok, so this makes sense. Maybe she is just walking around trying to get to know the neighbors. I have an American flag with a USMC flag under it on my flagpole. The neighbor said he saw her taking a picture of it with her phone.

When my dad was older he "hooked up" with a woman he just met. He ended up losing his Rolex.
I am safe from that fate, never owned a Rolex...

Probably so.

That is a bit strange, but most strange folks are harmless. I think that might fit a number of us here...

I found your post to be most interesting. I think you are fairly well astute. I do pay attention to details and especially that dog. It was one of the nicest Husky’s that I have seen. Beautiful blue eyes and the tail had a perfect curl.

I'd be very careful. She may have been "casing the joint." And that whole roller blading with a diamond bracelet part of it sounds weird. If you enjoy her company, I'd suggest meeting her at some neutral place, like a nearby coffee shop. (Since she likes coffee, she'd probably go along with that.)

My first thought was to be cautious of someone so forward. She may just be extra friendly or maybe checking out to see what you have.

No ring doesn’t mean she isn’t married. She may live with someone.

You could walk around the block and see if you spot her.

Good news. I didn’t see her today, but I was out flying most of the day. We’ll see how it tomorrow goes.
