Nice tribute to Ukraine

My grandson plays the domra in the Sydney Balalaika Orchestra and has twice been to Russia to perform there. The orchestra hasn't been able to meet for rehearsals during Covid restrictions.

I'm wondering whether any of the traditional music they play is actually Ukrainian.

I wouldn't be surprised, Warrigal. The two countries are next door to each other and culturally similar, as far as I know. I wonder if Russian orchestras would be allowed to play Ukrainian music now.

The Sydney Balalaika Orchestra is an amateur orchestra made up of musicians of many different ethnicities. The musical director is a man in his seventies who is ethnically Russian and he arranges the traditional music to suit the orchestra that consists of domras, piano accordions, guitars, a couple of balalaikas, percussion and a cimbalon which is a kind of dulcimer.

Images of the instruments are shown here - INSTRUMENTS | SBO (balalaika.com.au)

Some of them originated in Ukraine.

This is my grandson in costume. He plays a treble domra that has the sweetest, clear sound. It was made specially for him by a craftsman in Russia because he is left handed and no such instrument could be found in Australia.

Good to see so many in the United States and across the world standing with Ukraine. I hope they survive their nightmare, and it ends soon.
