Nightmares. We've all had them.

squatting dog

We don't have as far to go, as we've already been
Well I got up this morning I don't need to know no more.
It evaporated nightmares that had boiled the night before. :(

With your old folks eating dog food and your children eating paint.
While the pirates own the flag and sell us sermons on restraint.
And while blood's the only language that your deaf old ears can hear.
And still you will not answer with that message coming clear.
Does it mean there's no more ripples in your tired old glory stream .
And the buzzards own the carcass of your dream?

Yes I read it in the New York Times that was on the stands today.
It said that dreams were out of fashion.
We'll hear no more empty promises, there'll be no more wasted passions
To clutter up our play.
It really was a good sign, The words went on to say.
It shows that we are growing up in oh so many healthy ways.
And I told myself this is exactly where I'm at.
But I don't much like thinking about that.

Brilliant....!! ..and not so far from the truth , or the very near future, the way things are going.....

George O , eat your heart out

I rarely remember my nice dreams when I wake up ... BUT I can almost guarantee that I will have a bad nightmare if I take any type of medicine before bedtime. .. sleep aids, anything.

Sometimes I have the same dream over and over. Those dreams are usually a feeling of being chased and I seem to just stay out of reach which is terrifying. The other is not being able to remember my locker combination in high school.
What is strange is that my mom had those same dreams.
I dream a lot and sometimes it makes no sense but I can usually piece together where all the thoughts came from because of something I've seen on tv or what I had experienced the day before.

That was written by Harry Chapin.

Absolutely. (y) A smarter songwriter/storyteller there hasn't been since. I was privileged to meet him and his lovely wife back in the 70's when a friend and I sold them some home made furniture. Better, caring people you will never meet anywhere else. He cared more about world hunger, (and did something about it), then any politician. R.I.P Harry. It was a privilege to know you.
You'll also note my "Leaning in a heavy wind that no one else can feel". My tribute to a great human being.

Shakespeare knew a thing or two about sleep and dreams:
'If we shadows have offended,
think but this and all is amended,
that you have but slumbered here,
while these visions did appear.
And this weak and idle theme,
no more yielding but a dream.'
(Puck, A Midsummer Night’s Dream)

Why does the OP assume "we've" all had them ?

I have never had a nightmare in my life. Dream yes, nightmare no.

Nightmares. We've all had them.
It's been quite a while, but I used to dream about being in a combat firefight situation(based on real life experience) and having problems with my weapon jamming; also dreaming that reloading was hampered by having the wrong ammunition.

There were a couple nightmares(don't remember details) that woke me, I can attribute those to medications.

I had a rare sex dream last night. A friend and I were at a house and he had to leave. His girl friend grabbed me and started kissing me in a way that I have never been kissed in real life and begged me not to go with him. I'm still rattled how wild that was and that was just kissing. Of course I woke up before it got better but I probably would have had a stroke if it got further along.

I used to love the TV series "Profiler" about Samantha Waters, a widowed mom who worked for the FBI as a profiler on the trail of a dangerous serial killer. I had to stop watching reruns because the horror of the cases she solved and all the violence was giving me chronic nightmares.

Because you don't recall them does not mean you have not had them.

Ah ! So you know me better than I know me ?..... That's good too know, next time I need to know something about me, I'll just ping you.

Trust me, if I ever had a nightmare [which I have not] I would remember it.

Recently I had what was the first, and hopefully only COVID related bad dream.I was dreaming I was supposed to be taking some pills to keep it away and I couldn’t remember when or whether I had taken them or where they were, was thought I had taken some, but no way of checking , couldn’t find them. Woke up ready to tear the place apart looking for them and had to reason with myself that it wasn’t true, there were no pills. Took a while to settle down again.

In contrast I had a really good dream not long ago. Dreamt I was visiting old home town and went to check out this darling ice cream shop where I and my dearest friends had gone to in HS and every time after we were at a game and other times just to socialize & eat chocolate ice cream.
Most all of them but me and 1 man I’m still in contact with have passed on. In the dream
while I was reminiscing, one by one they all gradually wandered in,probably 8 -10 or so, laughing and talking and we got the biggest booth & hot fudge sundaes, and there we would spend eternity.
