No A/C UGH!

My condo building was built in the 60's, but everyone here thinks our HVAC unit came over on the Mayflower. Maybe not, but I've lived here almost 15 yrs and there are recurring problems every summer. Main issue...they can't get parts easily, always requires several days wait.

They put a band aid on it, as usual, on Thursday after 1-1/2 miserable days. It didn't go out again until 8 p.m. Friday night. Aarrgh!! It's 86 degrees in here, no relief in sight, and thank goodness for all my friend's floor fans. I shouldn't complain, I'm only on the 2nd floor. I know the upper floors have either left the building or roasting.

For those of you in cooler areas, if such places exist, I envy you!

I wish I could transport you to southern Vancouver Island, lately it has been quite balmy, temps in the seventies. Oh, and I have AC and homemade cherry pie! We could sit on the terrace, inhaling the fragrance of my garden, have a glass of wine if you wish.....

If it's as old as you say it is, they really need to bite the bullet and replace the whole system with one that uses the new Freon. It's foolish to sink money into a system that still uses the old R-22 Freon.

What a wonderful invitation, Shalimar, and how I wish I could take you up on it. Everything about it is appealing. I'll try to be there before you go to bed tonight....please leave the light on! :eek:nthego:
 
ITA with all of you on replacing it. The Association has been extremely slack on this, and what they are suggesting will cost the owners a $$bundle$$, but this is ridiculous & so overdue.

Of course. I will leave some sliced roast beef, cheesy baking powder biscuits, and pie for you in the fridge.:D

You can buy a portable air conditioner that works like those huge window fans from back in the old days. I knew a friend of a friend who had one and it worked great for people who live in condo buildings where the AC is unreliable. :sentimental:
 
Oh Katybug It must be terrible. I can't stand the heat and humidity. Our power went out for a few hours yesterday and today and I thought I had it bad. My daughter has an in room air conditioner that doesn't go in the window. It is on wheels and it works pretty well. I don't know what they cost and you would have to have someone bring it to your apartment but at least you would have a back up.
 
In our condo building (72 units on 3 floors) each unit has its own AC/heat. The building is now about 41 years old. We replaced ours in the spring between the heating and cooling seasons. Many unit owners are snowbirds and don't use them as much as us who live here year round. The AC/heat is the unit owners responsibility. Replacement took less than 1 day.

This must be what my daughter is bringing me. Her in-laws had it for their cabin I the mountains. They've been out of town, but are on their way here now.

I'm one of 5 seniors in the building. A very nice younger neighbor just knocked on my door to tell me I should open my window and slider. We had a serious thunderstorm about an hour ago and he wanted to let me know the temps had dropped a bit. I tried it, but the awful humidity is still there! Whew!
 
Mine went on the fritz about four hours ago and the inside of the house already is a muggy 85 deg..

My heating, plumbing and a/c man has been a buddy of mine for over 25 years and is also a preacher.....I called him and he said he'd load up his a/c stuff before heading to church and as soon as he gets done preaching tonight him and the wife will come straight here after the service, which should be around 8ish.

Ruth, does the water drip into a pan? How often does she have to empty it? Thanks
 
Remember growing up without it? I do, those hot, humid summers and no a/c. Live in Seattle now (40 years) and have never had it here either. Really don't need it except for maybe a day or two a year. We now own Dyson fans, boy are they worth the money!

That's what they have planned for our building, Manatee, and I can't wait!
 
Sorry you are suffering with lack of AC. You can visit me too if you wish, I have some roast chicken and rice and veggies still. My AC is working well even though it is so muggy outside. I'll send an airplane for you and a driver to bring you to my apt. on the great lake. :sentimental:
