"No good deed goes unpunished"

This morning I get a call from my friend across the street who's a great animal lover. She says there's a soft shell turtle down the street in the road and she needs help relocating it to the pond around the corner.

OK, we put it in a box and take it to the pond. I stand by the box holding the gap in the fence open while she tips the box.

All of a sudden ANTS SWARMING UP MY LEGS AND BITING. I have never seen ants move that fast!

My ankles and feet are covered in ant bites. Thank goodness they weren't fire ants or I'd be at the emergency room. I took two Benedryl immediately and am soaking feet and ankles in Epsom salts, which seems to help. I'll slather on an anti-itch cream and hope for the best.

Darn ants!

When I read the thread title, I thought back to an incident 7 years ago.
The house next door to me was being demolished after the owners died. While they were building another house on the property, a strange-looking guy (looked like a Meth Head) moved a small trailer into the back yard. I think the property owners wanted someone living there to lessen the chance of burglary of tools & building materials.
The guy had a large mean German Shepard with him. He often tied the dog to the trailer with a 20-ft. rope, while he rode away on his moped. When I was working in my back yard, the dog always barked & growled at me, so (of course) I couldn't go near him.

One day, I was running errands & I saw the dog in the street, 3 miles from home. Cars were speeding by, barely missing him. And it was around 106 outside.
I decided to take a risk & see if I could get him in my car & take him back to his place. My Lab had just died & I still had leashes & collars in my trunk.
I parked & called him to me. He just growled & showed his teeth. But after 10 minutes, (with other people yelling at me, "NO.....DON'T,") he slowly approached me & got into my car. When I felt safe touching him, my hand burned; he was probably wandering in the heat for hours.
I took him back to the trailer & knocked on the door, but the guy wasn't there. I saw how the dog got out; the chewed end of the rope was on the ground. He was probably suffering in the heat - with no water.

I took him to my house & he drank a huge pot of water.
After a couple of hours, I heard the guy's moped. I put a leash on the dog & took him next door. The owner was just standing there, staring at the rope - like an idiot.
I said, "Hi, I found your dog in the street & gave him some water."
He grabbed the leash & started yelling at me - "My dog don't get out....My dog don't wear no f---ing leash...."
I said, "Uh....you can see how he chewed the rope.....do you think I chewed the rope & let him out?"
He said, "Bullshit....my dog don't get out. And take off that f---ing leash!"
I said "You're welcome," & walked away.

After that, whenever I worked in my yard, the dog never barked at me; he walked up to the 5-ft. high fence so I could pet him. Whenever he did, the idiot yelled at him. I was hoping the dog would escape again & someone wouldn't bring him back.
Or that his owner would take an overdose.......

Oh bless! The little bastards (ants):are fast. But I’m pretty sure a box turtle isn’t aquatic. Rescued one once from the street, took him to the park, put him in the water, and he sunk like a stone! Rescued him
again and left him on the shore.

No good deed goes unpunished. Years ago a female coworker's car would not start after work. Dead battery. I gave her a jump start and she drove away. I got in my car and the alternator was not charging. It got blown. She gave me a bag of Hershey's kisses the next day. How nice.

As I said, this was a Florida soft shell turtle....they spend a lot of time in the water.

I posted this in October:
Although I would be glad to help in most situations, I learned to be careful & pick & choose which to avoid.
Years ago, I was with a group of friends at a restaurant/bar. One woman in the group was a heavy drinker. Since I rarely drink, I don't have much knowledge about alcohol content. I counted 11 times the waiter brought her drinks that I later learned were "Brandy." I saw how little of it was in the bottom of each big glass, so i didn't think she was drinking much.
When we got up to leave around 1:00 am, I saw that she was stumbling & having trouble walking & talking. Since I've seen what drunk drivers can do, I told her I would drive her home & take her to the parking lot tomorrow to get her car. Her home (where she lived with her parents) was 10 miles away.
A few minutes into the drive, she went wacko - accusing me of "trying something" with her. At first, I ignored her, but she got louder & louder & then started screaming "RAPE" out the window. I sped up to get to her parent's house faster. By the time we got to her parent's place, she had torn her blouse & scratched herself & was screaming hysterically. Neighbors started looking out their windows & two people started coming outside.
Thankfully, her parents (in their 60's) woke up & came & dragged her into the house & nodded "Thank you" to me; they had obviously gone through this many times before with her.
I sped away, worried that someone called police. I'm very lucky she was probably too sick the next day to file a police report, or I could have ended up bankrupt defending myself against an Attempted Rape charge.
I also later learned that I was even more lucky than I thought; there are men who spent YEARS in prison due to a rape conviction that was later proved to be false when the woman admitted she lied.
I'll NEVER let any drunk into my car again.
And I think twice before helping anyone.
