Back in the '50s, we seemed to have a surfeit of Michaels and Williams. Every third girl was either a Linda or Sue. All very nice names but they seem to be too normal for today's young parents.

William has been very popular in Australia in last 10 years or so.

Yes, I thought about putting "normal" in quotes when I wrote that.

When choosing names for our children, one criterion was that they each have a name that would be formal enough for life's serious side with an associated nickname for casual use if they chose to use it. (Having a "cutsie" given name could be a hindrance in, say, professional life.) As adults, one uses only the given name while the other uses both.
