No Matter the Cost, I Won’t Give Up ….

I used Miracle Whip when I was in my 20s. After I switched to Hellmans, I felt no substitute would be acceptable. But for some reason I tried the "mayo" from Aldi's. It was so bad but I found out my Honorary Daughter used it, so gave it to her. Later on when Walmart was out of low fat Hellman's, I tried their brand (Great Value) and really liked it. It had the same color top as Hellman's low fat so I figured it was really manufactured by the same company.

My brand of toilet paper is Kirkland (Costco). I was frantic after COVID hit and Costco was out of it for six months! I bought Scott (big mistake..still have 11 rolls of a 12 bundle pack) and tried Walgreen's brand of TP and Shoprite/Price Rite's brand of two ply. I liked both of the latter.

I used to only like Primo Taglia Muenster cheese which I used to have sliced at Acme's deli (the only place I found it). I had tried Sargento's and other popular brands but they didn't cut it. My son doesn't believe in eating processed cheeses so he had bought some cracker barrel in block form. I never thought of buying cheese that way. Shortly after I discovered Shoprite's Bowl and Basket block Muenster cheese and I love it. They were out of it for a couple of months and I tried another brand (slices) that I didn't care for. Now they have it again so I bought 4 of them.

I will not substitute the cat's food. There is a shortage of his preferred brand where I live so I am driving 80 km today to get some after checking online that they have it.

I gave him a substitute last night when we ran out.....he covered the plate with a scatter rug. Picky, picky picky
Yes, cats are finicky. They get used to their brand of food or litter and nothing else will do.

I still couldn’t believe I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter, but I searched my feelings, and found it to be true! Then I confused Miracle Whip with Cool Whip, and hilarity ensued… 😆

I generally avoid house brands, unless it’s buy the house brand, or take nothing. This forces the consumer to make a personal value judgement, but spot shortages are a real and ever-changing thing. Good coffee, IMO, is worth paying for, even though these days it grows increasingly painful…

I agree. I'm a total ketchup person and I swear Trader Joe's changed theirs. It seems more tart now and I like a sweeter ketchup. I don't have a brand I must buy, but I get the kind without high fructose corn syrup.

I don't tend to buy too many off brands. I do understand that anyone on a really tight budget may have to just get what they can.

Years ago I watched a program on TV where the woman's kids wouldn't eat non brand name cereals. So she kept the brand name boxes and snuck the generic cereals in there and the kids ate it without a complaint.

My favorite ketchup is out of production until early fall due to a shortage of peppers caused by the drought in California.

I felt lucky to find the one last bottle on the shelf at Walmart on Sunday morning.

The only mayonnaise I’ll ever buy is Duke’s.
Can’t do without the internet.

I'm embarrassed by how much money we spend on black oil sunflower seeds for the birds. We buy seed by the 40 lb. bag. Mixed seed would be cheaper but they reject eating some of the seeds.
Watching birds at our bird feeders is one of the few pleasures my 88 year old mom has left. So we will continue buying sunflower seed as long as we can. She gets very antsy if she thinks the birds are out of seed.
right now, the birds are really using our bird baths; fun to watch.

I won't scrimp on butter, Miracle Whip*, Tide, Dawn, ice-cream, dog food, and dog treats. I am particular about mustards and taco sauce. Also bread. I hate floppy white bread. My kids heard so much about the bread issue that they now buy Wonder Bread just to tease me. I like certain bread brands, especially when the 12-grain breads have 5 gr fiber per slice. That way, I feel extra virtuous eating it.

Swiss cheese - to save money, I bought the grocery store brand of sliced Swiss. It is the best I've ever tasted (for pre-sliced). My coffee is Great Value brand. I watched a video about how to set up my coffee maker (my daughter tossed the instructions) and the guy recommended it. It's good. Better, at any rate, than Taster's Choice instant.

I don't usually buy store-bought baked goods, except for bread. It is much cheaper to bake than to buy. Mostly I daydream about it - which is better for me than eating a batch of peanut butter cookies in one day.

* I only put Miracle Whip in tuna salad. I dislike mayo. It is easier to make grilled cheese sandwiches with mayo instead of butter, though. Can't taste the mayo.

We are doing this same ...40#...$28.00

Wheaten Lover, are you saying you butter the bread on the outside with the mayo rather than using butter? Does it not stick to the pan?

you're not the only one who can't believe, that I can't believe it's not butter.... is not butter... watch this from the Vicar of dibley

I sometimes use mayo instead of butter for the bread for Grilled Cheese. My husband detests butter so his grilled cheese is made with dry bread in a non-stick pan. It still browns.

Oh, that's priceless! A stray came in to live with us last year. I was happy to discover he was fine with Friskies and turned up his nose at the more expensive Blue brand, LOL. Fortunately, we have a friend with 2 cats, so our agreement is, anything their cats don't like, gets traded to us to see if our cat likes it - and vice versa.

Their cats adored the Blue brand, unfortunately!

Dorito cheese nacho chips, have not been able to find a generic brand that will do for me.

I must admit that I started trying store brands and generics years ago. I found most of them to be the same or better than name brands. I have the money to buy what I like when I want but got to thinking about the future. I want to make sure the money is still there if I need it when I am older.

Good for you, if you can afford it do it! I find myself being more selective in my scrimping, if it matters much I buy what I like best.

That's great! I am a much heavier smoker, probably 10 cigars a year. Sure wish we could get Cubans here. Next month I am headed your way for fishing out of Port Hardy, will be sure and get a few.
Wow, way up in northern part of my Island. Good luck with your fishing. Cuban cigar shop in Victoria is a fabulous smoke shop, wonderful Cuban cigars.

I bought Miracle Whip instead of Hellman’s Mayo. Won’t make that mistake again.
Well, this thread explains why Unilever is a dividend aristocrat, guess we should all buy some of its stock.

London-based consumer goods giant Unilever (UL, $46.17) boasts a powerful brand portfolio and the advantages of significant scale and sustainable cash flow. Its brands – which include Dove soap, Knorr sauces and seasonings, Lipton tea and Hellmann's mayonnaise – are household names. Unilever grew dividends by 5% last year and at a 7% annual clip over the past five years. Yield is generous at 4.2%, and UL shares trade at 18 times profit estimates – a slight discount to the consumer staples sector but a 10% discount to its own historical valuation.
