No Need To Wash Your Chicken?

We people of my age bracket have been told since day one to always wash chicken but now it is said it is not necessary and evern wrong because it leaves bacteria in the kitchen. So with that said will you quit washing chicken? It also said to defrost your steaks in the fridge not on the counter. This advice on chicken and steak both from Consumer 101 show on Saturday morning. This is not the first time I have heard no need to wash chicken. I guess the producers never heard of Lysol or Clorox.

P.S. I will still wash my chicken A lot of bacteria concerns should come from how clean the butcher's tools and areas are so I rinse my beef and pork as well.

This has been the case in the UK for ages - we've been told not to wash chicken.
Well, I've always washed chicken and I'll continue to wash chicken. And I'll defrost meat (covered) on the kitchen worktop.

yes I agree with Capt... we've been told for a very long time now in the UK not to wash chicken..

I don't wash it now, but I always skin my chicken anyway...

I always wash chicken and will continue to do so. Many of the food handling "rules" are for nitwits to help keep them from food poisoning themselves, but most people with brain cells know that they need to sanitize the area where any raw meat has been handled.

I wash my chickens, the idea that they have been stewing in their own juice for days and sometimes months grosses me out.

I also try to remove any remaining chicken gunk I find inside of whole birds as I wash them.

It may do more for me than the bird but that's ok!:):playful::eek:nthego:

I'm cackling like a chicken over the topic & the comments. I never buy whole chickens because I'm mainly just cooking for myself & id get tired of it before it would be finished. I just buy parts, like breast, thighs, cut for stir fry , usually only at one store & have to admit I don't wash those before cooking. I defrost any frozen meats I want to use on a plate, loosely covered with foil or plastic wrap, on a counter. I received a gift of Omaha steaks & directions were to defrost in fridge. I tried one that way, seemed like it took forever & wasn't as good as I expected & did the rest with my usual way on the counter.

I wash my chickens. After I'm done I have a small bottle of bleach I keep under my sink that I use to wipe down any place the chicken came in contact with including the sink. It's kind of like killing two birds with one stone because it also removes any stains in my sink from other sources and keeps it nice and white.

I rinse my chicken, even though it's usually boneless and skinless breast, like Bea said, just to rinse off the packaging juices. I just clean my counter and surfaces that may have been exposed to the chicken. I'll defrost steaks outside the fridge if pressed for time, not a problem. Like C'est Moi said, most of us know to sanitize any area that was used in raw meat preparation without being instructed to.

Have always thawed meat in fridge. Don't buy much chicken that's not already cooked by KFC or Popeyes. Years ago I cut up my own chickens and never washed them. Thought everybody knew to clean everything up with bleach, etc after having raw meat out. Mama always washed her chicken after she had killed it for supper! That was the best chicken I ever ate.
