Notes from Pappy's diary

Home for the aging meeting went well yesterday. We will be getting medic alert buttons in case of emergencies. Cost for us is $3.50 a month. Well worth it for peace of mind.
We are eligible for free hot meals too. Not quite sure how many meals are included until we meet with a person that will visit us soon. May be able to get help with our heating bills also.

Well it’s time to roll mama out of bed and fix us some breakfast. Have a great day folks.

1:40 pm and just waiting for the blizzard to start. High winds and 7 to 18 inches of snow forecast for our area. Worst winter here in years. Of course it is because we moved back to NY this year. Just glad I’m not driving my bread truck any more. 🚚
That is what happened to me when I moved back to FL in 1994. Except they had been having a drought. You could not wash your car and only water your lawn on certain days of the week. As soon as we moved there it started raining. Rained almost every day and had lots of thunderstorms. I couldn't believe it. It tapered off to raining every afternoon on a sunny day and then it would stop suddenly and be sunny again.

Yes, those afternoon showers were quite common where we were. Monsoons for a few minutes and and later you’d never know it rained.

I bet you saw lots of rainbows. 🌈

Just for you smiley:

When my family moved to the old house, my great grandfather built in 1900, indoor plumbing was just a wishful dream and the outhouse was a welcomed friend. This little house was located about 25 yards between the main house and our old barn. We had a long, steep driveway up to the house from the man road and the outhouse was fairly close to the driveway.

My grandparents lived with us for awhile, while the men were building their new house, and used the upstairs bedrooms. My grandfather always had some type of animal running around and at this time he had three goats. Josephine and Rags were milking goats and Batchlor Button was, well to keep the lady goats happy. Batchlor was the meanest, most miserable SOB and loved it when he could butt you and knock you on your ass. The only person that wasn't scared of him was Grandpa. He would grab him by the horns and drag him back to the barn. This damn goat would actually knock the siding off the barn just to get loose.

Needless to say, I feared this beast and always looked around when I went out to make sure the devil wasn't loose. Several times, as I was getting off the school bus, the monster was standing on the hill just waiting for me to start up the driveway. I could see his eyes turn red and would snort and bellow just waiting for the games to begin.

This is where my safe house, you guessed it, the outhouse came into the picture. If I ran my tail off, I could just make it to the outhouse before the demon reached me. Once in the safe house, thank God it wasn't busy, I would yell my head off until Grandpa came out to put the pain in the ass back in the barn. Grandpa always had a silly smile on his face. I think he thought the whole thing was hilarious.

Anyway, is wasn't much longer before we got indoor plumbing, sold the stupid goats and things got back to normal, well....normal for our crazy house.

As I reminisce about this, I wonder. I bet if I went back there now, and Batchlor Button was there, waiting for me, I would still be scared to death, but there is no safe house to hid in now.

Great story, Pappy!

My nemesis was an ornery old rooster!

We finally got indoor plumbing at the farm in 1954…the outhouse remained well into the 60s.

I could remember it word for word once you started writing it again - just like the first time - you should have made a small book out of it all - not for us but the family - but heh I suppose they have their own copies "old how" as me great mother-in-law used to say - I'd love to see it in print - funded by the entire family of course!! - you'd get a lot of sales on here laddie!!

After 3 emails stating there be a fire inspection between 9 and 11 AM, nothing, no emails, calls…nothing. I don’t know why

management sends out these notices because it never happens. Same with the snow removal. All the emails about when they would be here never happened.

Had my car towed to Kia dealer yesterday as something is going on with it. Won’t rev above 2500 rpms. Hopefully it will be covered as I only have 12,000 miles on it. My neighbor, who owns a large tow service, gave me a good price on the tow. Waiting to here from dealer what’s wrong.

Same thing happens here. They put a notice on all the bulletin boards not to add any money to our laundry cards because a new company was taking over the laundry contract. Said they would be doing that Feb. 4th. So nobody was using it and waiting for them to take out the old equipment and the new company to come and put the new ones in. We were excited about it! Never happened. Nobody said a word to us about it and still haven't mentioned it.

That isn't by any chance a company called Jetz, is it?

My daughter picked up our groceries and brought them over for us. By golly…we eat today.. 😉
She has a bad cold so she didn’t stay long.
Already having a heat wave. It’s 43 degrees out there. Still not ready to sit outside and read my book I just found.
The fire inspector did show up about 4 pm yesterday. Took less than 5 minutes and our alarms are working just fine.

Forecast is temperature dropping and 1-2 inches of snow. Darn sick of this and ready for some warmer weather. The only disadvantage of our apartment is it never gets any sunshine in our window. It is a cold place to heat and keep really warm. I had to purchase two of those electric throws to keep us comfortable at night watching tv.
Couldn’t sleep that well so was up at 5:45. Enjoying my coffee and quiet time right now.

Heh Pappy my boy tells me there's a new car out with automatic braking system - if it recognizes danger and you haven't brakes automatically before you can - sounds a bit fishy to me? but very handy if true?? [no joke - serious stuff]

It’s true smiley. All kinds of warning systems on newer vehicles.

It said it was going to cool down but 14 degrees, c’mon Mother Nature, wise up. We did get a bit of snow yesterday but it all melted off by noon time. Sunday was a very quiet day for us. Morning church service, on our tv, at 9 am then we streamed Heartland most of the day. There are 279 episodes so we will be watching this for awhile.
The excitement is almost unbearable. 😆

Had my optometrist appointment today and my pressure hasn’t changed. Most of my family had glaucoma so I have to keep an eye, no pun intended, on my pressure. Said I have dry eyes and to use my Systane drops 3-4 times a day.
We have about another inch of snow again. Hope it’s the last or near the last. All done with doctors the rest of the month. It’s a good feeling. Kinda like first day of school vacation. 😊
