Now Self Service Check Outs Are "Asking For" Tips! Seriously?!!

The world just keeps getting crazier. Before my friend told me about this, I had just read an article about tipping getting out of hand, but they didn't cover this one! The YouTube poster from Fox 26 News is clearly indignant about this, as we all should be.

LOL, that guy really tells it like it is!

The only place that ever gets my change is PAWS Thrift. I said it in another thread, it's like the stores now want us to help pay for their employees.

Just last week DD and I had lunch in a High End Restaurant. The service was slow, even tho' we'd booked a table in advance, we were still made to sit among the walk-ins for 25 minutes, despite there being empty tables in view.. and several little things we asked for weren't accommodated.. for example.. we asked if the chilli Alioli which was automatically served with the first course, be changed for plain.. they didn't do it.. and several other things were not up to standard.. ..so when the bill came an I was about to pay it, my daughter spotted that there was a service charge on it..and as the bill was high the service charge at 15 % was quite substantial , she asked the service charge to be taken off, which they did.. but this is a stealth tip... people often will just automatically pay the bill including the service charge without even noticing..

I will tip whenever the service is good.. but even if the service had been good in this instance I would have preferred to have chosen to tip separately rather than have the restaurant automatically expect it..

I read online that stores do this because more people will leave a tip than not. Sheesh I once asked a Walmart employee working in pets if she could get me a jug of cat litter at the back of an upper shelf. She flatly said no. All it required was for her to use a handle with a hook on the end to grab it and slide it to the front of the shelf. I would have taken it from there. After that, I had an eye out for where they kept that hook and got my own cat litter. They will never get a tip from me.

she said No ?... OMG.. I would have reported her to the store manger...

I think the whole point is that our tipping culture is getting out of control. It's one thing to tip for exceptional service, and quite another for tipping someone just to do their job.

Giving a tip via self checkout screen is just another way to gouge the public, as it is totally unknown where the tip money is going. To an employee? Probably not. More than likely to pad the company's profit line.

Another thing that urks me is when I'm checking out at a supermarket, the cashier will ask me, "Would you like to donate to_______?"
Or "Would you like to roundup and donate to ______?" I support and donate to specific organizations of my choice. But I hate being asked
every single time I make a purchase. It's so annoying.

that one annoys the heck outta me. Many stores have it built into the Card machine.. so you have to physically press the red button one side to say no... or the green button to say yes you would like them to take money from your card as a donation ( no-one says a word, so it's not like they're telling you in advance to give you the chance to opt out )... well I'm telling you these little buttons are tiny.. and hard enought to see if you're using your card IN the machine.. but for people who like me need their reading specs to see, and don't wear them when I'm out .. you get charged when you have no intention of donating often, because you're simply pressing the wrong button.. ... and also.. if you use contactless.. ...it absolutely infuriates me . I donate to Charity regularly ..I don't need stealth donations taken from me..

I'm good at saying no when I want to. There are a couple of places that do this for charities I support and I will roundup but it depends on the charity. A tip for service depends on actually getting good service so the self service cash register isn't going to get one. It makes me laugh to think that anyone would tip a self service checkout.
