Nuisance Calls: Someone Keeps Calling My Cell Phone

It started yesterday. The person called from an area code that is the same as mine. I didn't pick up because I didn't recognize the number, but she called back immediately. Thinking it may have been someone I know who got a new number and obviously wanted to reach me right away, I answered. The woman asked for her mechanic Maricio (or something like that). I told her she had the wrong number. But she kept calling...a total of 5 times between 6:12 and 6:15 p.m. last night. Of course I ignored the rest of the calls.

I did text and asked that she please stop calling my number because I am not her mechanic. But not sure if its a cell phone number. Calls from the same number came in today at 8:50 and 8:51 a.m. I had already blocked her, but it still shows as missed calls. I noticed when checking the log for that number, I received one call back in October. When checking my voicemails, what I assume to be 3 "messages" from that caller, there's mostly silence with some sort of background noise before the messages ended.

Maybe she was hoping I'd answer using the word "Yes". 😏 Have you ever gotten a nuisance call like that?

Last September and October, I was receiving incessant calls allegedly from Midland Credit Management which is a debt collection agency. I had received no mail by post that I owed anyone anything and I am fairly sure I have no debts. I am obsessive about paying my bills promptly. I finally reported them to "Do Not Call" for a violation and my state comptroller.

They stopped for a while, then in January started up again. I had to go through the same procedure of reporting them, and again, they stopped for a while. I am still getting calls from them, but less frequently. The problem with MCM is that a different number shows in caller ID every time they call, so can't be blocked.

I use these online sites to look up the numbers if the caller ID doesn't show anything:

Deb, if you're using an iphone, you can block nuisance calls even if you don't know the number, or if it's a different number each time. I had the same problem and learned that you can put that in Settings. It blocks all numbers that are not in your Contacts list. If they call, your phone doesn't ring, but your phone shows the number that tried to call you. The caller gets a message telling them to leave a voice mail; of course, they never do, at least, they never have in my case.

In the rare case that it's a legitimate call that is not on your contacts list, they will probably leave a voice mail for you. Then, if you call them back, they go on your contacts list.

It's made an enormous difference to me. Before I did that, I would get as many as 2 dozen of those nuisance calls every day, each with a different number. I'm enjoying the silence.
 
I used to regularly get the 'recorded message in Chinese' calls - very often on a Sunday. Apparently it's some kind of scam around immigration laws. Also, when I bought a web domain from a certain very much advertised provider, they kept calling me asking if I wanted to buy business services from them.
 
If I block a number, the next call from it goes to my voicemail which accomplishes nothing, since it would do that anyway if I simply didn't answer. They need to make it so that blocked callers cannot even ring my number.
 
My Panasonic landline phone system has a Call Block button in red on everyone of my phones and the base. I just press that button and that number can never call my phone again. My Samsung mobile phone has never received any calls which I did not authorize. It may block every phone number calling me if they are not in my phone directory.
 
When we moved to Tennessee from Nebraska, got a new phone and decided to get a new number using the local area code.
Soon after, started receiving calls stating, "You have a collect call from the Davison County Correction Facility".
(the local jail)

This went on every night for weeks.

I refused the calls and felt sorry for the person who really wanted help from the person who had given up their number.

Reporting it was a good idea Deb. And you're right...these people do call from different numbers. I suspect I got a call from the same person but from a different number today. Thank you for the helpful links. usphonebook showed me the name of the caller and some of her relatives! Brave browser wouldn't let me open Spydialer though.

It is infuriating. When we moved to Dallas and I had a separate line for business I was constantly getting calls from a collection agency for Nicole McQueen. She was clearly a deadbeat who had the phone number before me. There was really nothing I found that I could do but eventually the calls stopped. Maybe she paid her bills? 🤷‍♂️
 
For months we received calls several times a week from a collection agency. They were looking for someone with the same name as my husband but in a location at least 50 miles away.
Sometimes they would call several times a day. I think they thought that if they aggravated us enough that we would pay the bill just to get rid of the calls. Instead I filed a complaint with our state attorney general’s office.
They claimed they had only called us one time. Was it a lie? Of course it was. Regardless, the calls stopped.

For a long time we got calls like that on our landline, debt collection agencies calling for an Alison Tisdale. The calls finally stopped.
 
I don't know why humans do this, but if you're given a phone number, and then you call it, it's the wrong number. So, you think you misdialed. You call it again. Wrong Number. BUT this is the number you have so, it must be the right number. You redial it. And after several times redialing, you wish that person, who keeps saying it's the wrong number would just get off the line.

The funny side of this, was when my bil and sister left military life, one guy was always calling for "JB" it was always "Hey is JB there?"

I told this guy who never said who he was, that "There's no "JB" living here" finally after two months the calls stopped. I then happened to chat with sister and then it hit me, "JB" was my sister's initials.

I then said "Hey this guy called for two months, asking for you, I said "There's no "JB here" She laughed and thanked me for for fobbing him off.

Turns out, he was also in the army, but was a wife beater and was always trying to score on my sister. They were thrilled I didn't figure out who he was calling for. Also that he didn't know or remember her real name.
 
Today I got a scam text beginning "Your CV is getting attention" and going on to suggest that I could make some large amount of money by working for them. I'm on a three-day week, heading towards full retirement probably at the end of next year. My CV is not online anywhere.

Mack, if you're using an iphone, go to Settings and look for Silence Unknown Callers. Set it on that. Your phone doesn't ring. You just get a silent message, a few words giving you the number that tried to call you.

There have been days that I've gotten over a dozen messages, each one with a different unknown number that tried to reach me. My phone never rang.

I have an android, but after reading your post, I checked settings, and yes, there is an option to block unknown callers - - - the phone won't ring, and they'll get voicemail. Wow, I didn't notice that before. Thanks!

I've gotten all kinds of nuisance calls. I get those, too, that are silent.

I am going to be more careful when answering ads on FB for housing or other basic necessities. I'm not saying anyone else has done that but I have. I typed in my information for housing, senior housing, and almost immediately started getting calls for Medicare.

I am not interested in those calls. I already have health insurance. They persist in calling all the time. They tricked me into giving my number for senior housing when they are selling health insurance.

They just never stop once they get your number. I have a landline that allows me to block incoming calls that are not in my directory . I don't have it setup to block right now because I may get a call from someone who is visiting me this Tuesday.

I can turn that blocking on very easily with no problem and intend to after my visitor leaves.

I can sympathize with you on the annoyance of these calls❤️
