NurseLine call-in in Medical Advice

Well, they can be really helpful and sometimes you just need some reassurance.

The only time I called my insurance's 24-hour nurse line was when I woke up in the middle of the night having my first PVC attack. It's scary when you don't know what it is and you think your heart is skipping beats.

She was very reassuring and told me that she thought it was PVC's. She suggested that I not take a chance of it being something serious and suggested that I go to the emergency room. She also wanted to make sure I wasn't there alone and was going to call an ambulance for me which I didn't need as the Spousal Equivalent was there.

She also called the Emergency Room to make sure I had gotten there safely.

I really appreciated the assistance.

We have a similar help line at our local hospital. I rang them with bad stomach pains and vomiting. The first thing she asked if the vomit had what appeared to be '"coffee type granules"? When I said "Yes" she said get straight to hospital. I did and after further tests I was taken to the Operating Room where they removed a 4cm. Gall Stone stuck in my small intestines. It's called a Gall Stone Ileus. Never been treated with Gall stones ever. They said it was a "rare case".

I've found this service the same as emergent care. You ask them for advice and they say, "See your primary care physician." At least the nurse line is free. Emergent care is an expensive referral service.

I called once for my son because I thought they would say get to an emergency room which is exactly what he needed to hear. They did and we went. But this is the reason I don't call them for myself. I don't want to go to the emergency room. I already have three doctors working on my case. I just want some information.
