NY State plastic bag ban, effective March 1st

Hopefully this won't sound like politics, but this viewpoint really irritates me. I'm aware that laws differ from state to state, but all the states I've been in or read about have work requirements for food stamps AND do not abide by the Dept. of Agriculture's "Able-bodied adults Without Dependents" classification. Meaning, all adults who aren't disabled must work, and even teenagers over age 16 who aren't in school, and parents who have young children and even babies. So, as individuals who are employed pay taxes, there's no such thing as 'on the dole.'
So, why is it that SNAP recipients don't have to pay for the bags and those taxpayers who get no subsidies for food have to pay for the bags?

And why do you get upset about something so miniscule? Like people are having a great victory at your expense?
I know it's true for some states, not positive for all, btw.

Ps
Bags are much cheaper to manufacture, and since we are forced to purchase them now, should be sold at cost. That's my miniscule complaint.

It's the principle of it, not just the money, I've never liked moochers and have never been one. I like fairness. Call it a character flaw if you wish, doesn't matter to me, I have a right to my opinion and you have a right to yours.

Just asking a question.

When my area banned the sale of foam coffee cups my son bought me a huge supply from Amazon. I'm supposing this will be true for plastic bags, and most other stuff. I don't care about it being plastic, I care about being charged for something always part of the purchase.

Figure out a way to get SNAP and you won't have to pay for them. Ahahaha!

I have no idea.
During the years I've been in this city, I've only known of one grocery store that charged for bags, and it didn't matter whether customers had SNAP or cash. The store charged 5 cents for small bags and 10 cents for larger bags.

Ugh on the foam cups, @Pepper. Sorry, but those things are dreadful to drink from and an ecological disaster.

Los Angeles enacted the bag-ban four years ago and most everyone got used to it within a few months. I keep a stack of reusable bags in my trunk and use filmy produce bags for all kinds of things, dog poop picker-upper included.

The amount of trash on the sides of roads and freeways has diminished considerably since the single-use bag ban came into effect.

I was selfishly thinking of my poor own self and how life for me just gets to be more of a hassle each and everyday. Just whining.
That's ok. Would you like some cheese to go with that wine? I know I do....

I love cheese but can't get myself to eat that ''moldy cheese'' whateveritsname. I remember telling an old friend once about the moldy food in her ref and she said (kidding?), "It's good for you, mold is penicillin". Ugh!

Except for Adli, there's no counter to bag our own. I have on occasion just wheeled my cart out with un-bagged groceries to my car and bagged them in the trunk of my car. That works for me as long as the weather permits.

Radish, at Costco you have to bag your own also. Lots of people use cardboard boxes that Costco puts out near the checkout for recycling.

@Pepper, I also wondered why you needed a huge supply of styrofoam cups when you knew they were banned and knew why. What do you do with them?
I prefer the syrofoam, but didn't ask for them. My son gifted me. I never use more than one a day, and I have at least 4 cups of coffee a day, usually. I like this better than cups. Don't know why. However, I'm down to a month's supply and will be using my 'Grandma' cup from then on.

In my area even SNAP recipients have to pay for the bags.
That will change for New York state residents on March 1, 2020.

In areas that have adopted the five-cent paper carryout bag reduction fee, the fee does not apply to SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) and WIC (Women, Infants, and Children -- a nutrition program) recipients, and they are exempt from paying a paper carryout bag reduction fee for paper carryout bags.

I intend to swipe a large amount of the bags used for vegetables & fruits, as I put meat products (chicken, beef, etc.) in these bags prior to checkout bagging as I don't want this leakage on other food products. It isn't safe anyway to have your hamburger leaking it's blood on other foodstuffs. I do it now and will continue to do so.

You have to be very poor to qualify for SNAP, and prove it. My niece received SNAP benefits when her cancer prevented her working so she could keep food on the table for her three minor children. I certainly do not consider her to have been a moocher.

Her son got SNAP benefits when he became the children's guardian after her death. Suddenly he went from a 21 year old young man with a wife kliving paycheck to paycheck to head of household of five. He needed those SNAP benefits to keep food on the table for his siblings. I don't consider him a moocher, either.

Sometimes people need a little help -- would you take food out of children's mouths? IMHO painting SNAP recipients as moochers is a bit harsh.
