Oakland news crew security guard shot while they were reporting on a crime

I don't get all this dancing around the gender of the security guard who was shot. He is a man. Other news stories refer to him (correctly) as "he." This political correctness on the part of the news media is making communication almost impossible. When hearing about one person repeatedly referred to as "they," the listener or reader is never sure how many people are being talked about. Why have "he" and "she" suddenly become dirty words?

I absolutely agree...

They used the pronoun 'he' in the op source. Said 'he' was taken to the hospital. I used 'they' meaning the entire news crew.

But yes pronoun avoidance is becoming an issue. In the meantime going into a big city is like venturing into a dystopian future as portrayed in the original RoboCop movie made 30 years ago.

Because that’s how nutty society has become. When you have some people claiming there are as many as 16, or some other ridiculous number of different genders, then you get this nonsense of the media pandering to a small percentage in order to make themselves feel righteous.

The guard was referred to as "him" at the end of the video and "he" in the written text. But I'm with you, this gender thing is out of control and not my flipping priority.

Back to the video, what a sh!t show. The fact that reporters even need guards with them shows the decline of civilization in some areas. There have been reports of reporters being robbed of their, I'm sure expensive, equipment in the past in the SF Bay Area.

I'm getting off topic here, but this gender thing is great for the personality disorders. I'm not saying for all this is the case, but I know that people with personality disorders love to be a victim. So this works for them. Example is the guy with the beard I posted about at the little old lady volunteer thrift store who made an issue because he was kindly refered to as "sir" by two volunteers. Had a fit stating he's "non binary" and left in a huff. Also with a larger dog in the store and no mask which this store requires. What a victim.

And don't get me started on my own mother.

I didn't catch any "dancing around" with regard to the guard's gender, the article reads:
Officers took the victim to Highland Hospital. He was initially listed as critical, but according to police is currently in stable condition.

"An Oakland news crew security guard was shot while they were reporting on a crime/robbery in the area."

That's the first sentence in this topic.v

"An Oakland news crew security guard was shot while they were reporting on a crime/robbery in the area." That was the first sentence in this topic. Who was reporting on the crime/robbery? If it was the security guard, that's where I think "they" is incorrect. If it means news reporters (more than one), it's fine.

But regardless, some of our newspapers have switched over to using "they" as the only pronoun, no gender, and the word "they" means singular or plural.

I think the journalist just used poor sentence structure. Should have read something like "A security guard was shot while an Oakland news crew was reporting on a crime of robbery." I think it's just poor structure, honestly.

I believe you're right...the "they" was in reference to the news crew as a group, and not some kind of gender neutral effort.
