Obese People Article

There were times, and cultures where obesity was a status symbol. The Zulus, from what I've read, fattened their Chiefs and their honorary title was "Mighty Elephant" or somesuch. Even the Chinese expected the aristocracy and powerful to be fatter than the peasants. Aaahhh, the good old days.

We should deport all fat people But, ..... where are we gonna send them? :dunno:

I do understand the concerns about the burden of extra medical expenses but that seems to be a problem everywhere these days.

I see that NZ has around 50 McDonald's locations. Didn't check how many Burger Kings, Wendy's, KFC's, etc.

I wonder if they're going to force them to close up shop and get out of town before sundown as well? After all, if all you do is arrest the users you're doing nothing to eliminate the pushers.

While we're at it, will they ban the importation of all fattening foods? Will doughnut possession become a serious crime? Will candy bars be considered weapons of large-mass destruction? Potato chips, butter, ice cream, bacon ... ban it ALL.

Odd that they use BMI as an action trigger, since much of the rest of the scientific world acknowledges that it's a flawed measurement method.

.....

......an article with pictures showing a week's groceries in different countries.

Great article.

I'd really be interested in seeing the same thing done just for the U.S. - I think it would go from a truck-load of junk food or a room-full of fine cuts of meat and exotic veggies to a homeless person who gets by on a few dumpster scraps. In fact, that could well apply to ANY country as there will always be those with and those without ...

There's nothing wrong with any of these places/foods in my opinion...I enjoy a Hungry Jack's burger (Burger King) a doughnut or an ice cream on occasion, about 4 -5 times a year... the problem is that many don't look at it as a once in a while treat and make pigs of themselves by over indulging...usually brought on by shear laziness to either cook or buy something more healthy.
And, can anyone tell me, what's the difference between a burger you make at home and one bought at Hungry Jacks...? When we make them, they have a beef patty, lettuce, cheese, tomato, egg, onion etc...yet some think this version is healthier...DOH! If nothing else, the patty at HJs is flame grilled which removes most of the fat content...
I'm not suggesting that this type of food is healthy but it's all about "how much", not "what"

4-5 times a year is a rational amount of "exposure" to these toxins, I think. As you said it's the people that live in these places, that are addicted to the "food", that have the most problems.

But as to there not being anything wrong with these places? I have to disagree. Too many studies on what exactly this food is made of, documentaries on what the workers do to the food while it's cooking and being served and the simple fact that you get what you pay for.

It is a HUGE difference, depending of course upon the availability of fresh ingredients in your area and your willingness to combine them. Have you ever seen the films showing the pink extruded meat-paste that is sold to you as a burger in those places? Or, it's been frozen to within an inch of its life, then resuscitated on the grill.

Fat, by the way, is not always the enemy. As they found when they sampled that new test-tube burger (and as any good chef knows), fat is necessary in certain amounts to make the food palatable. As the popular Paleo Diet states fat is necessary in the human diet, not something to be shunned.

Those are natural fats, though - not the added ones, nor the high levels of sugar that are added to most fast food to "flavor" it. Carbohydrates are actually more of an enemy than fat - just take a look at all the carbs in commercially-prepared food. Look at the grease they use to cook your food. Look at the preservatives. Those are ALL far more dangerous than natural fat.

I'm not suggesting that this type of food is healthy but it's all about "how much", not "what"

And I would venture to say that it's both. ;)

As for the "What", rat balls are rat balls - it might be legal to have 0.00247 gms. in a half-kilo of bologna, but I don't want ANY! Therefore I won't give my custom to those places that feature brands of food known to include them. In that case, "how much" is ZERO.

Granted we all choose our poisons, so from THAT philosophical view I agree with you. But I will always feel far more comfortable preparing meals myself, with the best ingredients I can find, than going to one of these chain eateries and gambling on the disaster du jour.

Maybe you need to read up on just what we get when we buy similar food stuffs for home...the meat I've seen made into mince that we buy for our burgers, spaghetti sauce, etc, etc, looks no different to me...extruded just the same using the same type of machinery in similar conditions.
While I don't eat from these places all that much, as I said, I've never been sick or had any rat droppings and other nasties that you seem to believe are included...and do you really believe the food stuff you buy from the super market and cook at home is any different/better/ healthier...I quite often read about super market chains being fined for selling out of date and polluted food...there is an ongoing battle here in Australia to have many types of OS made foodstuffs removed from our super market shelves as they contain some horrific chemicals and other "un-healthy" things yet people still buy it and cook at home with it...just as bad or worse than a bought meal from a fast food outlet...

I seen the interview with the South African Gent & his Wife in New Zealand.
The New Zealand Authorities want to have a look at their Maoris, There are
some big boys among them.
I have'nt heard anything from the New Zealand Authorities in reply, have to
wait & see!:aargh:

Nowhere did I say to buy your meat from the supermarkets - I agree that they aren't always much better. But look at where the big fast food chains buy THEIR meat, and you might understand why I'd rather take my chances in a supermarket, or better yet at a butcher that understands what quality means.

It isn't that I seem to believe that they are included ... U.S. FDA laws explicitly state the maximum amount of contaminants allowed in foodstuffs. I used to work in the food industry as a flavor/color technician - I KNOW what the laws are, and they aren't pretty. If you lived here and knew those laws I think you'd pause before eating a lot of the food offered for sale here as well. It's one of the reasons I eat minimally - less chance of ingesting any of that garbage.

People are an odd lot - they'll sacrifice quality for price, but then they'll bitch to the heavens about what is in their food. Offer them a safe and sane alternative such as organically-fed, free-range, non-steroidal beef and they'll turn their noses up at it because it costs $1 a pound more. To those people I say enjoy your cheap food, because in the end chances are good that they're going to pay the price. Already I can see the trend in this country from eating this kind of food - they have low energy levels, their thinking is muddied and they prefer to lay on the sofa eating their Chips of Death instead of taking the time to prepare a wholesome, home-cooked meal. They all cry that they don't have the time to do that, but time is the same for everyone, so I wonder how it is that so many people DO find the time.

Maybe they just give up a few things, like watching TV ...
