Occasional problem gripping things

Every once in a while I have a problem when gripping something with my hand; like picking up the salt shaker. My fingers/hand wrap around it, but they just don't grip. So the item falls out of my hand when I lift my hand (to lift the item).
It seems to happen when I'm not really thinking of what I'm doing.
I'm pretty healthy, other than type II diabetes, which I control with diet and pills.
Is this 'normal'? Should I be alarmed? Should I tell my Dr?

I would ask about it the next time you go in for a routine visit. Ask him about possible exercises that might help like squeezing a rubber ball in your hand while watching television.

I try to keep a running list of all those types of things and pack as many questions into my twenty minute visit as possible.

I have a problem a few times a year where I get violent painful cramps in my hand and whatever I'm holding goes flying across the room. Its not a big deal unless I'm holding a hot mug of coffee, its sort of like a Charlie horse in my hand. I asked my doctor about it and he said that's interesting. Hopefully you will have better luck.

Good luck!

Surely it's not the same thing I had, as there were other symptoms as well, but when I couldn't grip, it was a ruptured cervical disk requiring surgery. Let's hope it's something else. I would definitely see a good ortho specialist. Good luck to you.

I've been complaining of "dropsie" for some time and my grip is pathetic.
My hand shakes when lifting something the weight of a cup of coffee.

I have now had one shoulder replaced because of advanced osteoporosis and already that hand is much stronger.
I will proceed to the second operation on the other shoulder to complete the recovery and am looking forward to once again being able to open jars by myself.

It could many of the things mentioned like non functioning nerves wether impeded or nerve damage/deterioration. Or it could be strength. Sometimes really dry fingers don't allow for a good grip. I've read over the years where lack of B-12 and/or potassium could make it harder for the nerves to fire.
