So, why not use tranquilizers?

Backing up;
Man constantly invades wildlife areas.
Wildlife live there.
Wildlife hunt to live.
When hiking in remote areas, accept the notion that you could encounter a natural hunter.
Understand what could happen.

That’s my opine.
To me, it’s a no brainer.
Am I daft?
Have I lived in the woods too long?

What’s your thoughts?

The Dinosaurs ruled the Earth for many millions of years. We're not going to make it anywhere near that long.

I totally agree. We invade their space and they are the ones that suffer. We have a bear in our area and when I had my little Yorkie I didn't let him out alone. As much as I loved my little dog,had I let him roam free and the bear got him I would only have had myself to blame.

My neighbor has chickens and complained when the fox got to the chickens. I told him it was his own fault. Make a better enclosure for the chickens. The fox was only doing what Foxes do. He didn't like that response.

I think the disturbing statement in the article was that they may not have shot the right cougar. I think tranquilized and relocated would have been the better option. The article sounds almost like they are considering open season on cougars. That would be tragic.

I'm outdoors all the time and I give wildlife the due respect it deserves. I try to intrude as little as possible.

I've never had any experience with cougars. Coyotes seem to be the offensive animal in this state (sorry farmers, I kind of like coyotes). They've been poisoned, trapped, shot(including hunts from helicopters). Then there were those brave farmers who seemed to understand how nature works. They put a llama or a donkey in with their herds. Those animals are fierce and will take on a coyote who is attempting to attack the herd. It worked so I don't know why that isn't considered more often. Coyotes aren't stupid, of course they will go after an easy meal (unattended young livestock or chickens). When in the wild they are useful and will eat rabbits, rodents even bugs if they are hungry enough.

Sometimes fires really upset and confuse wildlife. Look at all the fires up and down the western states.

There were big wildfires up near Yellowstone one year and big wildfires near Trinidad colorado. A young brown bear wandered into western Kansas and a couple of years later a moose showed up.
The bear had some burns. Of course he attacked farm animals. He was lost and hungry. He did get tranquilized and treated and fed and when he was able to be on his own he was taken back to the mountains. The moose was interesting. It didn't really bother anybody but it had to be tranquilized because it was getting a little frisky with some of the cattle. That was amusing but not worthy of being shot so I'm glad he was tranquilized and taken back towards Yellowstone.

These stories are always sad.

We had a similar situation in this area involving a bear that wandered into a populated area.

In this case, the bear climbed a tree and the conservation officers shot him with a tranquilizer but the fall from the tree ended up killing him.

They could have left him up there......he'd come down when he got hungry.

We had a small one here locally , couple'a years ago..He became quite the celebrity , naturally the locals named him Boo-Boo..I saw his butt..:) once as he was climbing over a wall , and saw him running across a field. The local police just followed him for several days, just to keep people at bay. Not letting anyone closer than the police car was. Finally he wandered into the perfect place , and they darted him. Word was they transported him to the woods east of here.....he had nothing more than a hangover....<grin>

The lady had ben missing since late Aug.
Doubt any remains would still be in that big cat's stomach.
Seems an excuse for open season.
I do believe that particular animal needs to be put down. It's got the taste of easy human meat.
But slaughtering all cats till you think you've got the right one?
ODF&W has done some dumb things with fishing, but this one tops it.

I like 'em too

I love their nightly songs
