Ok....what the heck is this?

I love it!
a spread that I have on toast or you can put it in casseroles....be warned; you either love it or hate it..

"shocking at first"; "love it or hate it";

What in the world, then, is this stuff? Really gross ingredients, or simply something many frown upon, like liver? imp

When I had cancer a friend felt I needed to have some. A very salty and yeasty paste. She told me to put it on toast. To those from the US.... decidedly an acquired taste. You either love it or hate it. Now to hear from our friends from OZ and the UK....

I agree with Holly but my hubby puts it on his toast every morning. Full of B vitamins but very salty and disgusting.

It is yeast extract basically....and it is not salty and disgusting, in my humble opinion....

Here we are again, the Marmite wars. Re the green sick head -- If you don't care for Marmite, holly, that is OK, but some of us do like it.

Very similar.....my brother doesn't like it as much....but you really need an Aussie...I have never tried it.

And here I thought it was made from ground up school marms!:confused:

The scene in "Big" where Tom Hanks as the adult "little boy" where he places anchovies in his mouth, frowns mightily, and proceeds to rapidly and anxiously wipe it off his tongue, is an absolute classic!

This thread has led me in that direction somehow. imp

Aussies grow up on Vegemite. I like it best on hot buttered toast and the trick is to use just the right amount....too much and it is overpowering. Hugh Jackman recently showed Jimmy Fallon how to get it just right...sure it would be on Youtube. I had Vegemite toast with an egg on top for brekkie today.

It is a spread then.i wasn't sure although I could have googled it I suppose. It Vegamite the same thing?

As a kid, my mum bought Marmite. We mainly had it as an addition to meaty stews. Vegemite is basically the same product. Both are made from yeasty waste products of a brewery. They are rich in B vitamins but are also very salty. Children seem to like them on sandwiches or toast (I never did). Vegemite and cheese sandwiches are very popular with school kids. Vegemite and butter between two VitaBrit biscuits is a fascination - as you bite down, brown and yellow "worms" escape through the holes in the biscuits.

About twice a year I enjoy a slice of crispy crust white bread, spread liberally with butter and smeared with a little Vegemite. Very enjoyable but not really a healthy staple.
