Old Radar Site Pictures

Just a few miles down the road, during the Cold War, was Griffiss Air Force Base which was loaded for bear with B-52 bombers carrying H-bombs. It was a SAC base and employed hundreds of folks.
These planes were on call 24 hours a day and ready to strike at their targets overseas.

All around this area are closed radar sites and equipment just rotting away. About ten miles from us is the Verona site of which I have a couple of pictures. It was rumored that this site had missiles at the ready to protect the air base. There are several round bldgs. Which, I suppose, could house these.

Speaking of Griffiss, I came across this video from 1986:

Thanks dbeyat45. Good to see the big boys again. Their flight path was behind out house and they would fly day and night, seven days a week.

One of the 52s went down in some woods not far from our home, but things sure were real hush hush. Probably loaded with God knows what, but we'll never know.

When I worked for ARA vending company, I serviced the whole base so it has always been an interest to me. I had to have special clearance to service the machines at SAC headquarters, and, an armed guard had to stay with me while I finished my job. I had to drive my truck behind the 52s to get to tunnel that led underground to their quarters, so I couldn't get there while the planes were running as they would have blown the truck over.

Speaking of security clearances, this shot taken by a friend of mine. We walked out onto the hardstand at Amberley RAAF Base, him with his telephoto lens in amongst all the top secret gear while I leaned on 140:
