Old time name calling! Somewhat controversial!

I have never heard the term birthing people, but I have certainly heard the term woke and usually not in a respectful way.
That's because it's used as an insult by people who don't know what the term Woke means.

"Woke is an adjective derived from African-American Vernacular English meaning "alert to racial prejudice and discrimination". Beginning in the 2010s, it came to encompass a broader awareness of social inequalities such as sexism and LGBT rights"

I was just sitting here thinking how sensitive everybody became since the fifties, yet there was far less dislike and hatred under the surface than there is now! Close your eyes now, and stop watching this thread if you get upset when it comes to societal slurs!

In the Navy we called each other: Wog, dago, frog, limey or kipper, Mick or Paddy, and, in my case, Kraut or Squarehead! Yet it was mostly in a teasing spirit with no one holding grudges! One couldn't do that now! The condemnation would be quick (and justified in some cases) yet I see such a great divide in our present society that it scares me.

Was it better to let it all hang out, so to speak, rather than suppress anything that could be misinterpreted! And to be very clear, I abhor racist or sexist slurs! I am talking Western males!
We don't get out enough any more and really socialize. All the bars and taverns are closed and each of us is home with his beer and cable TV these days.

There are no more union hall gatherings and meetings where workers drop all the divisions between them but being union brothers & sisters. No more bowling leagues after work. Etc. Etc.

What passes as socializing today is sitting at a keyboard and commenting on SF or Facebook. We need to get back to real face to face social gathering then all the stupid little unimportant differences would go where they've always gone - to the dump of unimportance.

What baffles me is how accurate data is being gathered when legal forms and surveys now often say "which gender are you identifying as today?" TODAY! If I say female today and then tomorrow I feel like one of the other bajillion new genders, how will they gather data they're seeking?

Oh, get this one... not kidding. I've heard that the woke folks are now calling mothers "birthing people." Honestly! What the devil is wrong with the word mother... mom... mama... madre... mutter... maman? And do they not SEE how ludicrous this stuff is?! Birthing people... good gracious!
Due to my job, I have filled out a number of SOC 341 forms. They and the paperwork that goes with it, makes my brain cave in.

Imagine my surprise when I had to fill one out and got the new form. They want to ask this, go ahead. But if you ask this, ask a much more important question that has always been missing: Do you have a history of abuse? Some people can't answer any questions. Some can. And if they can, a history of abuse is important. Link to form.

What causes further divisions is the anonymity of social sites like Twitter or Instagram that causes untold damage through hatred and mockery! I am very disturbed about the increase in teen suicides (mostly girls) who are shamed and made fun of about their appearance or views!

But there's also damage done to all of our societies at large through false news and hateful posts, meant to inflame and divide even further, plus, of course, the ubiquitous conspiracy theories which also tend to create an us vs. them! I am afraid that with a cell phone in every young persons hand nowadays our days of socialising will soon be over.

Good Lord, have you filed a complaint against clerk abuse yet? Or social worker abuse by the California Government? I think in my younger years I would have quit right there and then!

I'm not a social worker. I can't tell if you are being genuine or sarcastic. But when I have filled these out, there is a whole bunch more of documentation behind it. At least 2 hours, in addition to all the other work I had during my shift and the worry that you didn't fill everything out right. Reports faxed to ombudsman, the state with confirmations. Call the police for non emergency report, get the case number.

And I have known of these reports being weaponized against administration if the state worker doesn't like one of them. This is true and has happened. With a report I filed. That POS woman called me a month later at home at 1815 in the evening out of nowhere with all the information in front of her and blindsided me with tons of questions. They do it again, I refuse and will tell them I'll come into work with my boss as witness. I have confirmed that I can do this.

The report in question, I remember it was a super bowl sunday. I left work after 12 hours, about 7pm. After being on my feet for a shift and the worry of all this documentation. So it's no joke. And then to have a verbal issue weaponized like that POS did. No, no, no. Funny how she had time for all that. I was too busy doing my job.

Text and email and even forum posts have no tone... but so often people put in their OWN thoughts about what was meant by the writer. Then after they offended themselves they throw a fit it is like no one matures past jr high anymore.

People want to be offended in some way and they twist anything to accomplish that goal. all you have to do is bring up an item an many twist to fit in that they have been insulted or offended on same subject.

Many groups have made up names...... like birthing people or chest feeders etc.
I do not see how their preferred term that NOW offends many others is even considered to be helpful is causes further division....
I believe that only way it is helpful to keep people from focusing on other things a distraction if you will.

I remember at work sites someone would do find something like unequal pay or treatment ...........
management never wanted people to discuss items if people do not talk or compare they do not know what is really going on.

No, I assure you @Remy I was being sincere! What you are being asked to do is just plain ridiculous, I would even call it sadistic if I didn't recognize "Bureaucracy run wild" behind it all!
On second thought, I was being sarcastic but not with you but about the people who would okay and issue such horrendous paper work!

When I was a little kid everyone called everyone some sort of silly/fun/or hurtful name. It was all a part of growing up. None of us ever grew up to be crazy, make bombs or kill anyone. It was fun and it sort of relieved some sort of mental pressure from us.

Today, most folks are way too uptight. No sense of humour. The laughing in Canada I hear is mostly phony.

I can't remember much 'name calling'in my 24 years in the military, but I'm sure it happened.
Some of the nick-names we gave each other might be seen as inappropriate, but those were the times.

Not on the subject, but my pet peeve was the fact that for the entire time I was in the military, I
never could mention my religious non-believe.
Announcing you were an 'Atheist' was a career killer.
The whole 'God, Country' and 'No Atheist in a Fox hole' thing was a very real thing for the higher ups.

Sorry, just a rant I needed to get out.
The Canadian military had regular "church parades " BUT before the members went into the church, the order was "fall out, the non believers ", which covered anyone who was not a Christian. I was one of that group. A different country, with a different point of view about religious things. In Canada, religion is a private thing, and most people keep their views to themselves. JimB.

Man I have no idea where you get that idea ? I live in the largest city in Canada, 3 blocks away from one of the main streets in the city. The sidewalk cafes and bars are busy every day of the week, and from April to October, every week end in Toronto there are at least 3 or more Festivals, drawing thousands of people. The city of Toronto just held the election for Mayor, and more than 600,000 people cast a ballot. Does that sound like no one is out and about ?

"All the bars and taverns are closed " ????? Where do YOU live ?? Either you are incredibly isolated, or you are pulling everyone's leg here ?
JimB.

Yay for you. Much of the world does NOT live in big cities. I would have to drive 100 miles to find such action. You should get out more.

I agree with you, Jim. Like the beautiful city of Toronto, Los Angeles is filled with busy sidewalk cafes, restaurants, bars, festivals, and local events of all kinds, including the area where RobHisself frequents. Actually, especially in the area where he frequents - though many there are tourists. Union halls? No idea. Ditto bowling leagues.

The thing is, most people in their 60s and up aren't connecting with random strangers in bars and pubs - that's more of a young person's game. If I desired new friendships I'd attend a church, stop by a local senior center to see what was happening, or volunteer at a local hospital or animal shelter.

Certain social media outlets (like SF) offer the opportunity for true connection, but as in real life it takes time to develop relationships. I've been active here for six years and have several treasured friends here, but it didn't happen overnight.

Could you explain what you meant here, Robb? I'm in the middle of "small town America" and I assure you everything is open and usually packed, starting with bars and taverns. The only closings were happening at the height of all the mandates in late spring 2020 and some lasting into summer of 2021... but after that everything was open. Did you mean "closing" as in having to close permanently because of income loss from the pandemic?

That's because it's used as an insult by people who don't know what the term Woke means.

Rather convenient to leave out the rest of the source, and there is much, Old Salt.

So why has the term “woke” become so divisive? The trouble starts when campaigns over-reach, alienating moderate supporters. It is easy to see how this has happened. Examples include toppling statues of wartime leader Winston Churchill – cherished as a hero by many in the West – or companies being “advised” to stop using the word “mother” by LGBTQ+ charity Stonewall, which operates a “Workplace Equality Index” in the UK. To large swaths of the general public, this all screams of political correctness gone mad.

Wokeness also implies that those not in the club are asleep, deluded or wrong. This instant judgement forms a dividing line, forcing the other side to become defensive and further entrenching the debate. The moral superiority platform is hardly a way to bring sceptics on board, especially when wealthy and privileged campaigners who have co-opted wokeness do not even follow their own standards, such as celebrity Dame Emma Thompson, who flew across the world to join an Extinction Rebellion protest about climate change in London in 2019.

This particular protest involved blocking bridges and roads in the heart of London, including stopping ambulances, and the public outrage was so great that it damaged its own cause, as it provided the impetus for a new Police Bill which will restrict noise levels and timings for future protests.

Another example is the turbulent debate about trans-rights and gender identity. Trans people want to be accepted for who they are, including being legally recognised as the gender they wish. The UK already provides a Gender Recognition Certificate, through which one can change their legal sex but only after time requirements and medical checks, which many in the trans community consider demeaning.

Trans activists are therefore campaigning to reduce these checks in order to make it easier to legally change sex. These voices deserve to be heard. However, it is also reasonable to listen to the women who are expressing concerns about what this might mean for women in private spaces, such as in changing rooms, toilets and, more significantly, prisons and services such as domestic violence shelters.

Unfortunately, the instinct of modern wokeness seems to be to shut down such debate. cont:-

Sometime since the 50s, Wogs, dagos, frogs, limeys, kippers, Mick s, Paddys, Krauts and Squareheads read the founding documents of the US -the part that says all men are created equal. Instead of derisive nicknames, and discrimination, they demanded the respect for all men. The Civil Rights struggle, gay rights, women's rights, etc., all were about individual rights vs. discrimination. What is allowed in the barracks is not what is allowed as a nation.

All most people in the UK want is proportional representation in their own country. And not 5% running the 95% which is what we get. A bit like forums.

Woke is a term that can mean anything. It is used derisively to refer to progressive political ideology.

About transgender people. There's a misconception that @ 10:58, someone says they are male, then at 10:59, since they have nothing better to do, they say they are female. People with gender issues are traumatic, extremely emotionally distraught people. Suicide rates are one of the highest. Gender issues start in childhood. Your brain is telling you one thing, and your biology is telling something else. No matter what you do, you're always incomplete.

Which is exactly why it is a mental health issue. Many who trans eventually suicide anyway. One was my best friend.

As I recall our generation was quite woke during the 60s and 70s. Sad to say, a lot fell asleep after that.

You're so right about transgender people. Having known some - one since we were 11 years old - I can attest to the terrible disconnect people feel when their "equipment" doesn't match what they feel inside.

Not in the UK it ain't anymore, we woke up.

.
Over 500 people have died at Beachy Head since 1965, making it one of the most notorious suicide spots in the world. They all knew what they were and where they were going.

My post was complete, it pointed out what I intended to address. Your assumption that I purposefully omitted material was just that, an assumption lacking in forethought and rife with emotional baggage.
BTW, my source was simply: Woke - Wikipedia, read it to your hearts content.
