So I kept smelling a foul odor. I walked from room to room. I finally pinpointed the odor to the living room I rarely use. I usually use the den. So I go looking behind and under everything. I finally lift up a couch cushion & in the corner of the couch Lily the chihuahua has dug a hole and filled it with pieces of meat and half chewed bones & 'treasures'. She seemed very upset by my discovery of her treasure stash. Farty little Lily. She's such a digger.

I used to have a dog that did that, too. All you can really do about it is watch the dog like a hawk when he/she has a treat and see that she eats it or take it away from her.

My Bonnie likes to bury her rawhide treats in the yard and then dig them up after they are really gross and eat them. Right now I'm dealing with the fact that digging them up and eating them is making her really sick (vet says clostridium that lives in the soil or molds that are toxic). Anyway right now I'm having to follow her around outside and take them away from her, or else beat her to them and dig them up myself. Big fat pain in the butt, but the alternative is more big fat vet bills or her possibly dying.

Someone I knew who fed her dogs raw was smelling something foul, she found old rotting raw chicken legs and backs buried under her furniture cushions. My puppy likes to bury his rawhide rolls in the back yard, in shallow holes. I stopped giving them to him out there because he becomes so focused on where they are and moving them, that when we train him to go potty on a leash out there, he was too distracted. Now he has one large rawhide roll in the house, that he does try to bury under the chair cushions, etc.

To keep things from getting buried or lost in the yard we enforce that no toys, bones or rawhides go out the door. The only yard toys are tennis balls and footballs that can be machine washed.
