Online phone caller ID - no freebies anymore

There used to be online sites where an unknown phone caller's number could be looked up. Recently they either re-direct to Intellus or will not reveal the caller's ID unless a fee is paid at either site. What's going on with that?

You should still be able to google the phone number, and have it show how many other complaints there are, and if it is a telemarketer. No specific info, but enough to know to block the number.

They try to disguise the number to make it look like a local number.

If there is a 1 before the number it's a long distance call even though the area code is local.
Block it. I only answer calls on my contact list. You can set that on a cell phone.

There used to be a free "reverse phone lookup" app. I think it quietly disappeared several years ago. When you try to find the ID of the caller, you are told that you can see who it is, after you pay a fee.

I'm not into this call back/ user ID thing. So I don't know much about it. But rather than adding apps to your phone, or calling phone number look up sites, or paying for information about the caller's number; why don't you just answer the phone. Yeah, it'll take a few seconds to determine what kind of call it is,- that's probably less time than doing all the other things.?????

We let the Robo calls go to the answering machine. Rarely do they leave a message. They don't seem to keep us on their call list for long.

I used to pick up and hang up, but knowing there's someone on the other end of the line rather than an answering machine seemed to encourage them to keep calling.

If you answer, they know its a live line and will pass it on to other robos...JMHO

whitepages.com will still give you some of the reverse numbers lookup at no charge. I just typed my number in and it came up. The police has their own way of getting an address that matches a phone number. Cell phones are a little more time consuming to get the owner of the phone and their address, but it's out there.

It was different when everyone had a land line. Now with pre-paid mobile phones and spoofing numbers, it is impossible to discover who is making those annoyance calls. One time I got a call from myself!

I had heard this before and it must be true because I use to get 20 to 25 daily on my land line before I purchased a blocking device and that poor thing was worked to death after I first purchased it. Now it hardly ever has to block a call. I just checked it and there is not one call that has needed to be blocked today.

That's the worst thing you should do. You encourage scammers. Once they know you will answer, they won't leave you alone and they sell your number to other scammers. They are the scourge of the earth thriving on unsuspecting good people.
