Opinions wanted: Doorbell rang at 4:30am, house was not on fire, what would you do?

The storm door is locked but I usually talk to them through a window. Of course, there is a security device in the drawer of the bedside table. It is Appalachia after all. It comes standard which is why we have so little crime.

I have cameras and solar powered motion sensor lights set along the outside of my house.
One camera picked up a guy walking up my driveway. He got about halfway up to the house, saw my floodlight camera, then turned around and left. I've never seen him round the neighborhood before and haven't since then.

I bought motion sensor lights last year and they wouldn't fit into the fixtures. If I hire an electrician and they actually show up then I could get the fixtures replaced. The lights are up higher than I want to be on a ladder in order to do the work.

Get quotes from local companies. ADT is the top brand but there are other nationwide companies including this one. Just make sure monitoring is local, or at least in USA.

We have a camera that alerts us, yes even in the middle of the night. It says detect person or movement. We can then go look out the window. I'm not sure what I would do but most likely, I would open it for a female, maybe for a male, depends. We live remotely so there would need to be a good reason. Cop lives next door, just down the street yet we're each on 9-10 acres of land. I'd probably call him in the middle of the night to have I'm wait on the phone with me.

I will definitely look into some kind of personal spray. A can of Febreeze is too big to carry.

Maybe the dog warning sign is something to consider, I see that sign on people's lawns down the street.

Will do some reading on the cameras, I try to do as little gadget electronics as possible, but maybe there is a simple one.

Hi! I have purchased pepper spray a few times. I haven't used it and it's quite old so I am going to check out one of those self defense sites and get a new one. I don't know how long they last, no expiration date.

When I had a different pepper spray years ago. I had the occasion to pull it out and told the guy to back off or he'd get sprayed. He walked away and I got in my car and left.

I would leave the house lights off but turn the porch light on, open a window (my windows all are barred) and find out what they wanted. I would call for help if they need it but would not let them into the house.
