  • Being a real optimist, one knows all the possibilities of an outcome, knows how to deal with the worst situations that may come in the best ways, then goes forward with eyes on the goal. People are naturally goal-oriented, As such, to move forward in life, one must focus on what one wants, what the best outcome would be, learn from failures, and keep moving toward the gold. We have known for some time that the mind is a very, very powerful thing. Most people do not utilize its power like they could.
Being pessimistic is a negative reaction to a situation that may otherwise be positive. Rarely is the situation so bad that a positive response can't change the outcome for the better. Optimism is kin to the ripple in the pond. Good energy encourages more good energy which makes the world a better place.
Optimists dream up of new things but pessimists keep them on the ground. There is no set "better" way of thinking. It's all relative depending on the situation. There have been plenty of people who have changed the world that were optimists. The same can be said for pessimists. Again, it's all relative. I'd be interested in your opinions, would you favor more on the side of Optimism or Pessimism?

Pessimists tend likely to be right about the future and unhappy, according to studies. Optimists are often wrong but happier.
Most people are a combination of both, regarding different things. Pessimism increases with age, it is said/ Younger people have higher hopes
but this is a broad stereotype.. Optimists are prone to wishful thinking---beliefs without sufficient reasons or evidence.

I do not agree that"rarely is the situation so bad that a positive response can't change the outcome for the better." Wishful thinking.

Some people are afraid to even try and some try too hard and don't know when to quit.

Optimism, it's more positive and healthier for the individual and those who surround them to be an optimist. Negativity drags the person down to dark places and has a bad effect on all who surround them, IMO.

I prefer realism - thoroughly studying a situation and reaching a sensible, intelligent conclusion. Neither 'pie in the sky' nor gloomy Gus but realistic.

Ism…schmism

Pessimism
Optimism
Realism

Why does everone have to label everthing?
Put something….someone in a neat little box?

Gotta call it as you see it
Let those that require labels give it one
Don’t much matter to me

Put a label on that

My question would be can anyone really choose their outlook on life being either pessimistic or optimistic? Doesn't that kind of just come with who you are, personality, temperament, etc. one is born with? Has anyone here turned from being pessimist to optimistic, through maybe psychotherapy? Or even turned from optimism to pessimism because of life events? Even though most people are a little of both, I do think one or the other mainly predominates.

My BFF is a psychologist and she swears that keeping a positive attitude helps in life. From personal experience, I'd have to agree optimists heal better, and deal with life's challenges better. They enjoy better overall physical and emotional health. Being optimistic all the time doesn't come easy for me, so when life becomes too much I take a time out to reassess, then get back on track. I'd rather be positive. It's just healthier.

I'm a little of both but try to be more on the optimistic side. Usually it doesn't work. I get into a particular mind set about something and it's very rare that I change my way of thinking.

Due to my age, life experiences, & what is happening at any given time, I can be optomistic, pessimistic or a realist. Way to many varibles to lock myself into only one catagory doesn't work for me.

Which is better? Being optomistic & having what you hoped for become a reality of course. But then pessimism takes over causing doubt about what is hoped for will happen. Realistically, unless having complete total control over the outcome, hope is all there is.

I think being cautiously optimistic is good. I believe maintaining a positive frame of mind is beneficial to health and happiness.
