Pain and mood

Over did it at the gym Friday, my neck left side, my left shoulder, and even my left lower back muscles and hip are painful. I'm supposed to start a martial arts class at a new studio tomorrow. Gotta say- at 3~4AM this morning I was firm in my resolve to NOT do the class at all, ever. After the pain had subsided substantially, by mid-morning I decided that I'd attend after all. However, if the training regimen is strenuous enough to the point of causing regular pain, I'll have to back off. Pain pretty much wrecks my mood, so no need to bring it on un-necessarily.

I try my best not to hurt myself, but sometimes that's what happens. Even when I try to pace myself, I often end up pushing it further than I should. 🄓 Take it easy on yourself, old boy, and feel better soon. šŸ¤—

I hope you or no one else ever experiences having PMR. I have never experienced this type of pain. Yesterday, I did not take any Prednisone. My pain level was around 7 when I went to bed and 9 when I woke up an hour and a half later. They say pain level 10, you should be screaming, but I didn't scream, so I gave it a 9. My arms where they meet the shoulders, my butt, my inner and outer thighs, left knee and ankles all were very painful. I almost felt like I was paralyzed. My friend who I'm staying with wanted to take me to the hospital this morning, but I refused and took 30 mgs. of Prednisone. Two hours later and about 80% of the pain has gone away. Now I know why the doctors wean the patient off of the drug. I go home next Sunday, so then I will be able to see my PCP and go from there. I am staying in Daytona Beach Saturday night.

"PMR", I had to google that...."PMR". I don't think that fits my experience, more inclined to believe that my pain is osteoarthritis in origin.

This has been plaguing me for 10-15 years, had thought maybe some degree of an autoimmune disease such as Fibromyalgia, even MS, but ultimately I don't think so.

I had a forum member send me some literature on treating this illness. I learned that PMR is common in the U.K., which means to me that they probably have a lot more experience with dealing with it than the U.S. does. The member is from the U.K., so I want to share the information he sent to me with my PCP and the Rheumatologist. There has to be an answer to recovery from this illness.

If I go more than 2 weeks of not going to the gym or lifting my own weights, I feel like crap the next day as soon as I get out of bed, especially if I work on my bottom half. The last time I was at the gym, which was a week ago, I worked out on the rowing machine. The next morning, I felt like my arms were going to break when I would bend them.

My brother has/had PMR. He still takes Prednisone going on 5 years now, but tries to go off of it now and then with no luck. He was hospitalized for 2 weeks when he first got it because they thought he had the rare form of MD or Polio. I said "Polio? No, I doubt the doctor is right about that, but I guess anything is possible."

I keep having the desire to participate in that martial arts class that's next door to the gym. Several of my friends do, and they love it. But for now I'm going to hold off, I just started a moderately intense Yoga class, twice a week at the gym...I love it.

I think I 'could' do the martial arts class without aggravating my osteoarthritis too much, there are other reservations I have about doing the class. The class is right before the Active Aging class at the gym(M-W-F @10) which my wife attends as well. That's kind of a huge thing for her, as she is/has always been sedentary, and views exercise as not fun, but work to be avoided.

If I did attend the martial arts class we wouldn't be riding together to the gym, she would have to set the alarm, close the garage door, close the driveway gate and drive herself. I guess it's that I don't want anything to be a "put off" for her to go to the gym. Or, maybe there's something else, and I'm just looking for excuses...I'll have to give that more thought.

I would like to know why after I work out using free weights the day before, the day after, my fingers on both hands want to lock up like having a trigger finger, only on 2-3 fingers on both hands?

I just returned from the emergency room at the local hospital (I only go there if my friend who is a doctor is at work there gets me in right away, so long as there are no emergency case’s waiting) and he gave me a couple of shots of cortisone, which hasn’t worked yet, but he said by tomorrow, I should notice a difference. He thinks I am dehydrated or my tendons in my fingers are not functioning properly. I never heard of that.

Any ideas what could be causing this?

Since my leg sugery I have learned the difference between pain and soreness, I am sore but about a #1-2 on pain level, only 7-8 more months to go they say of it.
Anyone attempting to be in a good mood with their pain level greater the 5, is in for a challenge. I know, because that is what like with the Peripheral Neuropathy that struck me about 2 years ago. People with this constant pain can not eliminate it. We learn to manage the pain with what works for each individual. That varies widely.

I'm so sorry that happened to you and impressed that you signed up for that class! It's good that you love the yoga class because that's good for the body too. I'm sure you will figure out whether or not taking the martial arts class is both desirable and feasible at this time. Just take care not to overtax your body.

Maybe some tendonitis in the palms from gripping the weight bar, and the weight itself, maybe you were lifting a bit more...? I've noticed that the 'padding' in my palms has thinned with age, I have some weight gloves->these I use in workout, seems to make up for what Nature took away.

I see other men using gloves, so maybe I will give that a try. When my fingers lock up, they really bother me because I can’t bend them. It can last from a few minutes up to almost 10 minutes. I use 20 pound weights and do about 5 sets of 5 reps each.

The other issue I have is when I do leg presses, I get like ā€œcharley horsesā€ in my calves for a few minutes, but often. My doctor thinks I’m not getting enough electrolytes and I should either speak to a PT about how much I should take before working out or drink more Gatorade, but even then, a person can absorb too much electrolytes. I don’t understand any of this. I see guys taking supplements, but I never got into using them. Is there one supplement in particular that I should be using?

I’m not into body shaping, just wanting to build more muscle in my biceps and calves. I have seen guys do exercises without using weights to build their calves. I have tried some of those exercises, but my calves don’t get any bigger.

These ā€œcharley horsesā€ look like swelled muscles and hurt like hell until I rub them out. Have you ever experienced this? I have to rub the swelling until the pain stops and the swelling goes down.

My knee's no longer want to play doggie. ;)

The doctor prescribed Codeine, which is a low level opiate. I took them, took some more, and then even more. No help whatsoever. I went back to the doctor and said, "these don't do anything". He said, "well, the next step up is morphine, and we don't like prescribing that". I said that I didn't want to be on morphine, but the Codeine was a waste of time, and I wouldn't take it any longer.

I then went to taking 2XAnadin Extra (Aspirin, Paracetamol, and Caffeine) with 2X Ibruprofen, twice daily. This is over-the-counter stuff. Oh, and it really helps!!!

I have also started eating a piece of Salmon every day, because the oils are good for the joints. Honestly, I'm glad I left the Codeine behind.

i been increasing my magnesium levels..sometimes I have back and pain in spine between shoulders...if it starts i use ice..usually helps...
I need ice pack now but won't disturb this little dog on my lap in recliner

Analgesics and anti-inflammatory drugs relieve muscle pain and joint pain caused by local inflammation. They actually reduce the inflammation.

That's why the codeine didn't help you. Codeine, hydrocodone, morphine; those are for pain that can be traced to a nerve root or nerve bundle. All they do for muscle and joint pain is calm the pain receptors in your brain. So, yes, for that kind of pain they're a total waste of time and money.

Because I'm not always smart, I started taking TEN of those Codeine pills at a time. My knees were pretty close to agony at that point, and I was willing to try anything. I think I could have taken 100 and they'd not of done a thing. I think it's just the go-to medicine if you go in with knee pain..... I wonder what others do?!?!!

Oh man, that's awful. But your prescribing physician should have known better. For sure he knew you weren't having nerve pain. And nerve-pain medications could be associated with some types of dementia and memory loss....scientists are looking into that.

Physicians are supposed to educate their patients. That's part of their job. So, what a turd.

Here's how health care here is today. Doctors allot each patient a 10 minute window. They won't go beyond that. In that window, you can discuss one, and only one ailment. If you want to discuss another ailment, then you need to have another appointment. It's all to do with how the NHS measures Doctor performance. It's crazy.

But hey, let's cheer at the fact that I found something that helps, and I don't need a prescription for it. 8 days supply is £3. Goodness knows what the NHS pays for 50 Codeine tablets!
