Palm Sunday - April 2 / 2023

I may be nit picking here but Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent. It does not follow Palm Sunday.

Modern biblical study leans towards the opinion that Jesus was deliberately provoking the Romans when he rode in by the west (?) gate, parodying the entry by the Roman governor Pontius Pilate who rode triumphally in through the east (?) gate on a war horse, accompanied by his legion of soldiers.

During Passover festivities the Romans were very watchful for any sign of trouble from the Jews and would have been alarmed by the way Jesus was celebrated by the crowd. They took a dim view of any public disturbance and when Jesus overturned the money changers' tables in the temple forecourt they would have considered him to be a dangerous trouble maker.

When the Jewish authorities complained about him, the Romans did not hesitate to arrest him but did it under cover of night to avoid trouble from his followers.
