Paradise Question

Not too long ago I saw a quick reference in a post about a tropical paradise. I can't remember which one, but know it was 1 of 3 places that before reading the post I thought I would damn near kill to be able to visit...Tahiti, Bora Bora or Bali....all equally wildest dreams fabulous to me. But the post was very negative and for some reason I'm thinking it was because, like Mexico, it has become dangerous. That may be too extreme in description, but I was shocked to read something one of you knew for a fact, then I forgot to pursue it further.

Can any of you Aussie's fill me in with details? It was definitely from one of you who would know and I am more than curious.

Thx!

I'd give Bali a miss. Too many drunken Aussies.

LOL, but it was much worse than that. We've got way more than our share of those at all our resort areas. If it suits ya, go for it w/your beverages if you're on vacation, but what I'm referring to was enough to make me never want to go there. And that's what getting older does to you, I don't even remember where it is I no longer want to go! Just sad!

It wasn't on this forum but my Paradise Pick is the Banana Boat Lodge on Baliz. Not too long ago, I read where the island of Baliz is home to an awful lot of drugs and at least one kingpin who just sits around pointing and grunting.

I have a friend from Belize, now there's another huge fantasy for travel, but she said the bad guys are moving in all too quickly. Hey, we have to work around it somehow, it's everywhere. It's just all in how seriously their gov't regards it and delves out punishment. In Mexico the police appear to be equally as corrupt as any drug lord.

I didn't make the post, but the only truly dire warnings I've found were for Bali, because it's part of the chain of Indonesian locations that have been the victims of terrorist bombings in the past.

As with all resort destinations there are numerous warnings for boneheads that leave their money and jewelry in unlocked cars, or stroll down dark alleys flashing their American money. But beside stepping on sharp coral, watching out for sharks or being beaned by falling coconuts it seems that Bora Bora and Tahiti are fairly safe at this point.

Thanks, Phil, I think it was Bali. And now we can comfortably make our reservations for Tahiti and Bora Bora.

And you have to wonder who there are among us who would ever leave money or jewelry in a car, locked or unlocked? Maybe those who would respond to the requests for sending a little $$ to get more ....poor babes!

Bali never appealed to me ever. But plenty go there like lemmings to get ripped off, fatally poisoned by spiked drinks, suffer their entire holiday battling 'Bali Belly' and getting frisked, and or set up and blackmailed by customs because they seem to resent our dope runners bringing in drugs. It's considered unfair competition for their local growers apparently.

We've got a few doing it tough in jail there and another 9 have been throwing the dice on death row for years for getting off the plane with a couple of kilos of dope taped around them. They've hung a couple of us for it but not sure that was Bali, could have been somewhere else in that region. 'They' killed 82 of us by blowing up a bar. That was the obviously best place to take out the most Aussies in one hit. Pity they weren't all drug runners though, just garden variety drunks with families at home.
Those of us who aren't drug runners just go there to get terminally p*ssed, act like arseholes, and generally disrespect the locals. Think Jersey Shores with palm trees. It's the cheapest overseas destination so you get the cheapest tourists.
Probably the main problem with Bali is the Australian 'tourists'. ... but then, we form their major source of income so they put up with us.

Anyway, dunno why everyone's looking for Paradise, you have to be dead to live there don't ya?

Now I'll just go and cower while I wait for all the members who had a wunnerful time in Bali to get stuck into that rant.

Before I begin....fatally poisoned there by spiked drinks???!! WTH is that all about? I know you're speaking from personal knowledge on this and I totally trust what you say. Details please, if you are willing to share. And Bali belly has to be similar to the parasites my daughter and husband brought home with them from Cancun. It lasted almost 6 wks and there were no American meds to appease it, so it had to work itself out of their systems, so said each of their dr's. Their every meal routine was to eat, bolt for the bathroom, regurgitate/poop at the same time, and repeat after all 3 meals. Too much info, I know, but you need to know this before traveling to these places. I felt so bad for them. It was awful and they had tried to be extremely particular of what they ingested, particularly dairy. It's literally an intestinal parasite extremely common in areas where the same set of health standards our stomachs are used to are not in place. Cancun claims to have the same set of health standards that we do in the USA and I'm calling total B-S on that. I saw those kids after both trips and it was like nothing I had ever seen before, and they didn't leave home with it! What intestinal virus lasts 9 days with dr's treating both of them?? NONE! Just be warned if you choose to travel to these places.

I think you may have been the one who turned me off to Bali, Di, and I appreciate your info causing me to remove it from my exclusive bucket list. It's now lost all appeal for me. I imagined it as ultra paradise and an exceptionally lovely tropical vacation island, but I've obviously given it far more credit than it's due. Located so far away, it's not a common destination for many Americans who have so many less expensive and closer in proximity destinations available. But as Americans, we don't hear this and Bali is presented to us as a super ultimate/luxurious tropical vacation, well above the rest and then some. No slam on Jersey, it is what it is, but in my mind comparing it to the Jersey shore is like comparing bad apples to good oranges, the beach being the only common denominator. (And please let me say this so I don't piss anyone off, it would be the same as comparing it to Myrtle Beach, SC. For so many reasons, there is simply no comparison
for the Jersey Shore or Myrtle Beach to Bali.

I've seen enough pix to know how different it is from either....maybe some of the most beautiful parts of Florida and California would qualify to a slight degree, but they're not a super upscale remote island in the South Pacific -- which, IMO, is part of Bali's appeal. And now I'm hearing that even with all that you can get the same parasitic crap we can get in Mexico for 1/4 the price for a trip to Mexico and far less jet lag. See how vacation decision making can be so easily worked out?

Even the cheapest overseas destination for us on the East Coast of the US that may appeal to some isn't nearly as affordable as the Caribbean, with pkg deals galore and a mere passport will get you in and out w/basic ID. Unbelievable deals going all the time including hotel/airfare and 2 meals per day, and prices get even better out of season. Even those of relatively modest means can stretch their budget & get there. All the islands are loaded with mega tropical flavor and we can be there in 2-3 hrs, without many hassles. So for all my fantasy bucket list, your post lets me know Bali is no longer anywhere I want to go. And I sincerely appreciate hearing it since I could never afford to live my dream anyway.

I will never stop saying how much I love the international flavor on this board that can answer questions you forget to ask. It's a wonderful bonus and, Di, I especially loved the honesty in your post. Thank you. As of this evening, Bali is no longer on my bucket list. Appreciate your input!

Yes Katybug, it was Diwundrin in the Mexico thread...

@Diwundrin...Bali is our Mexico. Tourist traps, bent cops, and drinks spiked with ethanol in cheap bars risking killing the occasional tourist to make an extra cent on the booze markup.
Not to mention terrorist attacks, murders, rapes, muggings, STDs, 'Bali belly' bugs, you know, all those romantic South Seas fantasies.
Oooo yeah, great holiday spot, Sex, Drugs and Ethanol.

Plenty of weed available there too I'm told (no, I've never been there, nor likely to) but you can't bring your own. We've got 9 runners on death row there and at least one other in for 20 years for trying to get it through their customs. Doh! Apparently they believe in supporting local producers only.

My daughter and SIL had a holiday in Bali this year. As older visitors they didn't spend all their time in the bars or at Kuta Beach. They hired a couple of drivers to take them around the island on motor bikes because the roads are clogged with traffic and the bikes are the best way to weave through the blockages. They did a lot of sightseeing and thoroughly enjoyed their time there. The hotels were very good with pleasant amenities like spars, swimming pools and massages.

It all depends on what you are looking for in a holiday.

Katy, I was referring to the 'type' of people in Jersey Shores the TV show, not the geography.
The majority of tourists from Oz who go to Bali are bogans (kind of like rednecks) who can't afford anywhere further away and are only going for a drunken orgy where the neighbours can't watch them anyway.

But as Warri said, it depends on what areas you frequent I guess. But if you can't go to the beach without getting mugged or pickpocketed, or have a meal outside of an expensive Hotel without catching Bali Belly or have a drink in a romantic little tropical paradise bar without risking ethanol poisoning, or being blown up, then it's not really enjoying the atmosphere of an exotic destination is it?
You may as well stay at home and watch a scenic doco. The Bali of 'South Pacific' and the road movies is a thing of the past. While most of the locals are Hindu (or similar) it's part of Indonesia which is predominantly Moslem and administered with an iron fist.

They tolerate our antics for the cash we bring in but never miss a chance to ping a tourist for smoking a bong or jail them in a kangaroo court for carrying anything through customs. The bombings were a 'protest' at the antics of the infidels by Moslem extremists on the mainland. The Balinese locals are probably still the nice gentle people they always were, but they aren't in charge of the joint now.

I always fancied seeing Havana, while it's still in a time warp, but it remained a wistful whim. I think we're sometimes better to hold the dream than experience the reality.

Ha! I just knew someone would remember. That's the post that I was speaking of! Thank you, Seabreeze!

Without knowing the huge downside, pix of Bali almost take my breath away. It shouldn't even be mentioned in the same breath as any of our USA beaches, same as all those South Pacific & Indian Ocean. Ours aren't even close in beauty without all that tropical flavor, but they're just a heck of a lot easier to get to and far more affordable. I feel lucky to get to any of them.

Very sad the bad guys have taken over Bali. Not that I'll ever get there, but are Tahiti and Bora Bora still as appealing as I imagine?
