Part of our oak tree.....

A lot!! We were out in the forest camping in September, and as we were sitting by the truck talking, we both heard a loud whoosh noise and looked in the same direction. I'm always a little jumpy because I think of bears, but there are not many known to be in that area.

Anyhoo, after we checked it out, it was a big spruce tree that had fallen down...right by an area where we fish the river, so I'm glad we or our pets weren't underneath it. Not the first time we've seen trees that have fallen due to high winds, etc. Once on a dirt road, my husband had to work his way around this big tree that had fallen and blocked the road.

Rather than using his chain saw and winch to open a path, he was able to squeeze his way through the trees along the side of the road, so we could continue on our journey.
 
No,that is our friends property. I guess he was moving the tree from his truck onto the ground. He posted this pic on his FB though and everybody is asking if they can have that windmill. It`s on a payment plan already though-some bride-to-be wants it for her wedding lol.
 
Oh,and SB,I`m thinking this tree must have just made a whoosh sound because we never heard a thing. You would think we would have at least heard it hit the shed but we never heard a thing. And if it happened while we were in bed, it was pretty close to our bedroom. Guess we are sound sleepers....
 
Wow Mrs. R!! That's a hunk of firewood there:) If you had a cool firepit in your backyard, you guys could have family campouts right at home, with plenty of wood to last;)
 
We actually have lots of firewood just from what`s been falling from all these oaks,Denise! And a small shed full of it as well that our son in law brought us. And when the tree guy comes in a few weeks to trim all the trees,we`ll have even more. I wish he was coming sooner since they say we are going to get a doozy of a storm with high winds this Thursday-Friday. After that tree falling,I`m a little nervous. We used to have lots of outdoor campfires at our last house,since it had so many great places for it-and our own eucalyptus grove! We usually just go to dd`s for campfires now-that`s where we all hang out now-nobody wants to get their cars all dusty/muddy driving out our road. Works for me :)

Well, it would work for me too;) I love to go other places, not big on having company in;) Mostly because my places have been very small over the years;) Wow, a Eugalyptus grove, I don't think I've ever seen one. I do notice you have a lot of Palm trees around your area, cool;)

There was a place down the road from my last place, and every, Friday night, they would have a campfire (in a pit) and play music from the 50's, and dance on their deck. I'd sit out and listen to the music coming through the trees, loved it;)

Oh,that sounds like so much fun! Wes and I would LOVE that!

Putting in a eucalyptus grove was apparently a big thing in the 70s,during the energy crisis. Not sure if you were supposed to eventually burn it to heat your house or what-I don`t even remember that happening. Although in the early 70s,we had just bought a house in a new development that was once the San Francisco bay and had been filled in. The soil was so sandy that certain types of eucalyptus were about the only tree that would grow there. So if you wanted a tree in your yard,it had to be one of those. I missed the whole "grow your own eucalyptus grove" thing entirely. Only heard about it years later. Unfortunately,they then realized that the eucalyptus groves were a terrible fire hazard and will go up in a flash,so most people cut them down. I used to be so worried about it,living in a high fire danger area anyway,but we had about 50 trees-can`t imagine what it would have cost to get them cut down. The boys used to love having paintball gun fights in there-it was a jungle lol.

As far as all the palm trees here,that`s only because some guy here went into the palm tree business about 15 years ago and has sold trees to A LOT of people in town. Our friends bought several to put around their pool but they didn`t survive the first years frost. Yikes-they were out a lot of money.
 
I love hearing your stories Mrs. R;) Truly interesting about the eucalyptus trees, I will try finding some info on it today. I like researching stuff;)

Well, maybe one day we will get to have one of those campfire parties, I can't quit thinking how I would love to do that ever since hearing my neighbors have so much fun;) Denise
