Pawternity leave in the UK!

Yes, some companies now offer leave for employees who have just adopted or have sick cats or dogs. The time off varies depending on the situation. No fin or feather leave yet, but, who knows, it may happen. The larger question, though, is if this makes sense. Seems silly to me...

What a great idea! We Americans tend to think of Britain as an animal-loving country, and this is a great example. If people who have kids get time off to take them to the doctor, or take care of them, then people who have animals should get equal time off to take them to the doctor or take care of them.

I'm just thinking of the times when your horse colics (colic can kill) and of the time and effort it takes to walk him 'til the vet comes, or to load him on the trailer and haul to the clinic. Life or death.

And yes, it makes sense to adopt an animal during your vacation time. But what if an animal needs rescuing and can't wait 'til your leave comes up?

People are always preaching about responsible pet ownership. Well, part of being responsible is being there when we're needed ... by our pets.

Pets are part of the family, Ralphy!

For sure. We had a little miniature poodle for almost 16 years. He was almost like our 3rd child. Watching him fade away in his final days was almost like losing a child. To this day, we have not been able to take on another pet, as a result. However, the neighbors up the road have a great little beagle, and when they go to work in the mornings, she comes over to our place and lives on our porch for several hours until they return. She is a blessing.

I wonder how many pet lovers would be up in arms if they were asked to use this pawternity time off from their holiday entitlement

Why would they be asked that? Vacation leave is different from sick leave or other personal leave.

My son-in-law took a week off his extra saved days (aside from vacation days), when they got their puppy.
