Paying for Relatives

I have a brother who has 2 autistic adult kids. He's been having a rough time, his wife had a brain aneurysm. My sister and I were helping him out with his kids. The girl is easy to be with. We've been taking her places with us. There are things we want to do, but cost money. He's never offered any money when we took her out. I'm retired so I can't afford to pay for her all the time. I don't want him to think because we ask her to go, that were automatically going to pay for her? She's asked to go with us when we go out. I feel bad asking him for money considering what he's been through. At the same time I feel bad that his daughter doesn't get out of the house, he can't take her out anywhere because of his wife? How do we approach this with him? People get funny about money especially family.

The only thing to do is be straightforward with him. "John, we'd love to take Mary to the ______ concert. The tickets are $35 each. Would you be able to pay for her ticket?" Rinse and repeat. If the answer is no, I guess find things that are free or very low cost to do.
