Peculiar advice, mottos, bywords

Has someone ever offered you a few words in a tone that seemed to be meant well, but was puzzling... questionable relevance, nebulously aimed?

On the main-street sidewalk of our hearest small city. A guy I slightly know recently walks by me, looks me in the eye and said "remember to vacuum out your daybag every so often". Out of the blue, and he went on his way (opposite where I was walking)! Wha??

My impression of him has always been that he's a guy of few words, but never struck me off kilter. Haven't seen him again since, so couldn't inquire as to what he meant. Did he get this from a TV show, some stand-up comic online or something?
 

Some people say “I should have” or “I wished I would have” or “why didn’t I” after a run-in with an associate or after talking or debating a topic that usually turns into an argument.

I did say one of those lines once after a heated exchange with a subordinate. My Colonel was listening to me and after I dismissed the subordinate, he said, Son, let me give you a bit of good advice that I learned from my superior similar to the showdown you just had.
He said to “Never look back.” It only adds gas to the fire.
