People power has been used to free a man who became trapped between the platform and a train at a Perth station on Wednesday morning. Scores of passengers, together with staff at Stirling station, managed to tilt the carriage so the man could free his leg which was wedged in the gap.

The man was boarding a Perth-bound train about 8:50am when he slipped and became stuck. Transperth spokesman David Hynes said the man was boarding at the tail end of peak hour, but the train was still fairly busy. "He stood in the doorway and as he was sort of taking up his position there, one leg slipped outside the door, slipped outside the gap, and he was stuck," he said. "We alerted the driver, made sure the train didn't move.

"Then our staff who were there at the time got the passengers, and there were lots of them, off the train, and organised them to sort of rock, tilt the train backwards away from the platform so they were able to get him out and rescue him."

Mr Hynes said the train was stationary when the man slipped.

An ambulance was called but the man was not taken to hospital. It is believed he did not sustain serious injuries.
Mr Hynes said it was not a problem caused by overcrowding. He praised the actions of staff and passengers who assisted in freeing the man. "Everyone sort of pitched in," he said. "It was people power that saved someone from possibly quite serious injury."

Saw that several times on the news today.

He's lucky he wasn't in the subway in NYC.

They would've just walked across his back then gotten mad at him for delaying the train!!!! ;)

Warri, I was just thinking about the fact that we have gotten so caught up in the horrors of what's been going on for so long that we are overlooking some of the things that make living worthwhile.
There is a goodness in the world as well as the bad.
Maybe we should try to see it on a regular bases too, not just the evil and pain.
We talk of the anger in people, maybe a little peace would lighten some of the anger.
What do you think?

But in this case, the need of the one outweighed the needs of the many. (Star Trek III)

WOW Team work pays off.

Wonder if there isn't a flaw in the design of the system. How can they improve it?

Subways and elevators are scary when you think about it.

The way I've always seen it is that to come up with the huge amount of money necessary to install a safeguard that might help one or two uncoordinated people from a boo-boo is usually cost-prohibitive.

That's always been one of my most-enforced lessons for my martial arts students - to create and maintain a high level of environmental awareness. By itself it can thwart at least half of the bad things that happen to us.

There's a commercial on TV for some insurance company and it shows a (comical?) series of vignettes of people having accidents - one guy drives his SUV into his garage, forgetting that he has two bicycles on the roof. Another commercial has a lady flat out admitting that she can't parallel park, but that her insurance company offers forgiveness for such lack of ability.

Yes - we are now being paid to be unaware and unskilled.
