well in that case there's an awful lot of people with dyslexia... same with those who say Axe instead of Ask...They may have dyslexia and switch the T and H around.
Sure does. Try pronouncing Wollongong or Gunoo Gunoo. Both very irregular names of places in Australia.Local usage determines the correct pronunciation of place names. People unfamiliar with U. S. history always mangle Appomattox VA.
Which man? BATmanOne of my pet peeves for sure.
It's pronounced Hong KONG...not HONG Kong! And it's BatMAN and SpiderMAN and AquaMAN....not Batmun, Spidermun and Aquamun.
But I digress...
I sorta think they are a waste of time.I say HONG KONG, and BAT MAN with equal emphasis on both words separately. I would say AQUa MAN and SPIDer MAN, placing the emphasis on the first syllable of aqua and spider.
I had a friend named Heather who lived in France for several years. She said the French could not pronounce her name and called her by other names. I think it was the "th" that was troublesome but I'm not sure. They may have dyslexia and switch the T and H around.
And I think you don't look it in the mouth not KICK it in the mouth. LOLShe's correct if the horse was gifted to you!![]()
I just googled it an the th sound doesn't exist in French. I took French in high school but I didn't remember that.I had a friend named Heather who lived in France for several years. She said the French could not pronounce her name and called her by other names. I think it was the "th" that was troublesome but I'm not sure.
And I think you don't look it in the mouth not KICK it in the mouth. LOL
How about Realtor being pronounced Real-a-tor or nuclear as Nuk-u-ler?My pet peeve word is February, pronounced Feb-ru-ary, not Feb-u-ary.
I know there are many words that I mispronounce. I get corrected regularly by a co-worker![]()
Years ago, I discovered one of the secrets of a happy life. I no longer bother about things like how people talk.
Life is much simpler.
You mean like saying Des Moines,It gets even funnier with place names. I see it most often when regional or national news outlets try to report on events local to me
That's right! And I think you don't look it in the mouth not KICK it in the mouth. LOL
OMG is that what our accents sound like? Are they considered irritating? Because I think most people in the states like a British accent.Ya see...that's like me saying All Americans say Cah & Bah......
I was watching a YouTube video about hair styling. I watched it a number of times because the practitioner had ASMR qualities. Anyway, she said when applying product to the hair with a brush to use a certain pattern. But "pattern" literally sounded like "pa-un"Well, as an Australian, I was taught that, certain exceptions aside, when a word has just 2 syllables, the emphasis is on the first. If more than 2 syllables, the emphasis falls on the second syllable. I say a-PLIC-able.
However, I do notice a lot of American trends appearing in Australia, including during the nightly news. Pronunciation, like spelling, varies regionally and over time.
