Personal and Home Protection

During the 19 years since we moved into our High Desert Home, we've had 2 gentlemen living with us: Mr. Smith and Mr. Wesson.

So far, we have not had occasion to avail ourselves of their services.

If you know about my home defense system, you are either sleeping with me or you are dead.
In either case it is none of yer business. Even though I live in "Oh the Horror" New York,(a state that ranks about #47 in gun deaths) I take full advantage and thoroughly enjoy exercising my 2nd Amendment right.

I am in NYS for the summer and good old NY is one of the few states that will not recognize my concealed Florida carry license.
All the other states, on my trip up, have no problem with this except MD.

If having a gun or a baseball bat under the bed makes a person feel safer then by all means they should have one.

I'm 63 years old and although I've had the urge to shoot a few people I've never had the need to shoot anyone.

I've always felt that a bad guy will have the element of surprise and a weapon may not be of much use to me. I feel that carrying a gun or having one in the house would instantly increase the odds of me or a member of my family getting hurt far beyond the odds of me getting attacked by a bad guy.

Hopefully none of us will ever find out if owning a gun is a good idea or not.

Mr. Ruger, and a representative from Intratec monitor our house and property, along with a dozen other occasional visitors. However, where we live, crime is of little concern, the local police spend most of their time monitoring traffic, and answering calls about nuisance barking dogs, in town. Besides, if anyone were dumb enough to come into this forested enclave and try to cause trouble, there is a good possibility that they might not make it back to the main highway.

Even though I am a gun owner, I agree with you.

But I'm still going to keep mine because I like them.

That's as a good a reason as any!

We have a pair of dogs who are easily alerted to unusual noises, therefore the element of surprise would be to OUR advantage, not the intruder's!

My wife is also a shooter, but her piece is only a .22 Rimfire, while mine is a .38/.357, with Hollow Points.

I would never be without a handgun for personal and home protection.

If I had Mr Smith or. Mr Wesson here with me, I wouldn't be here. I was placed on a med, which had a weird side effect- "suicidal ideation". That's fancy speak for I would have blown my brains out. I stopped the med, and I am here, so.--- At first, I might have bought a gun, because it bothered me that I was now a "target". But now, a blind, cripple, one armed Girl Scout could take me, it doesn't bother me. I don't have a gun; mainly because I probably would have shot my hand off by now. I'm OK if other people want them.

Well I for sure know that is a good idea. We harvest several deer a year, usually get several turkey. I nail dozens of woodchucks each summer, the occaisional coyote and several coon.

I pull the trigger when we are slaughtering beef or hogs. I have shot a few sheep that were hopelessly tangled tangled in wire.

I put several thousand holes in pieces of paper and seriously deducted from the weight of aluminium cans for recycling. I have scattered many thousands probably even million shards of clay over several venues.

My weapons are mostly tools, and recreational objects. Yes they may be utilized as objects of defense, but likelihood of one of them being used in that capacity is infinitesimal at best.

Pappy sorry about the concealed carry for a non resident, but it is what it is. I Suspect you probably have a short pump in it stead.

My thoughts too. Although I have a couple of inherited guns in the house, the ammunition is either somewhere far away from them, or non existent.

I have a stun gum and pepper spray and would like to own a gun. Any ideas for a lady living alone? I don't know what to buy. I would keep it here in the condo and really not tell anyone about it.

I would recommend none. You have no experience with one,and can't gain any experience by leaving it in your condo.
Prpbably 90% of the folks who own a firearm for home protection are fooling themselves.

Most when confronted in their homes are going to get their ass handed to them and their gun stolen.

Owning a firearm is your right, but it is also the biggest responsibility you will ever take on.
You need to be crystal clear on your duty to keep that firearms out of the wrong hands. You need to know and understand use of force. Most importantly you need to be sure you can see the light go out of a persons eyes after you pull the trigger.

You must practice practice practice until you can load fire hit your target with your eyes closed.
You are not going to get that experience going to a static range once or twice a year.

I am assuming that being in a condo you already have several nominal layers of protection,in the form of restricted access and multiple doors.

I refuse to have a home alarm system - don't want to live that way. In NV we were robbed a couple of times - my pocket book once and an expensive bicycle another time. No big deal. I was mad but not afraid.

We try to remember to lock up at night. DH has a couple of pistols but, to be honest, I don't know where they are.
