Maybe I've just gotten old. When I was a teen having even a single tattoo was badass. Being able to drink the boys under the table? Yup you had your cool credentials in order. But piercings were one in each ear. Maybe for super edgy two in each ear. Guys might have one earring and of course body jewelry elsewhere...privately.

Today I was at the nail salon. It was really crowded so I sat on the radiator and had someone getting her paws touched up right in front of me. In an urban area you don't even think about staring...but two rhinestone earrings in each cheek. I didn't look again to see what else was there.

I dunno, I see that or ten holes in the same ear and just...ooooh darlin' that had to hurt. I mean people I've known like that finally got the right meds and felt much better. I guess now it's like tattoos. Some people just pride themselves in how many holes they have. I'm proud of my tats, but still one hole in each ear, I'm good.
 

Was watching Judge Judy one day and saw a woman with a diamond stud in each dimple. Or at least I think they were dimples-maybe just the earrings,not sure. I text my sis and told her to turn it on. She came over later and said the defendant,who was the plaintiff`s ex-husband,had them as well. First time I`ve seen that.
 
I was recently called to jury duty for an assault/rape case. During Voir Dire, one of the prosecutor's questions was if you, as a juror, would consider a young woman with multiple tattoos and piercings any differently than one dressed more conventionally. I thought the question was interesting.

Over the past two years I've gotten to know quite a few bright and caring young women in their 20's. A good number of them have multiple tattoos, piercings, wild hair styles and wild hair colors. At first it was hard not to let the "accouterments" distract me from our discussions. As I got to know them a little more I started asking questions, like "how much did it hurt to pierce your nose (or eyebrow, lip, or ...)? Or what is the design of that tattoo." Same with those with half shaved heads, varying bright hair colors and streaks. When I ask or comment, they are happy and excited to tell me the details.

My conclusion is that each of these is a very real and nice person who happens to be YOUNG. That's what they have in common. I'm 68 and find myself envying them. I've mentioned that and they enthusiastically encourage me with phrases like, "you're never too old," "go for it," which is very nice of them to say--at least that's how I take it. I'm passing on that just now. :playful:
 

I think people view things as body art or have personal reasons for choosing to ornament themselves the way they do. I'm not attracted to many things that are popular these days.
 
The hair colors are fine. Especially with darker hair. One young lady volunteer at the library one day, a deep chestnut with bright blue tips and it was pretty. I've done crimson and purple streaks and it was fun. Heck even Helen Mirren did lavender. But I'm sorry at my age if I was a hiring manager...tats on your neck, nevermind your face...and facial piercings no. If you have a small gem in your nose maybe...but lips or eyebrows or cheeks? Nonono
 
I got my first (and last....) tattoo as a 60th birthday present for myself. I had wanted a discrete "hidden" tattoo for years but my late husband was very much against it. It was just my little "wild" thing to do. No piercings except for one earring in each earlobe, which I've had since I was 19.
 
I've had a flower and heart bracelet since sixteen...cost me a job at Disney, my watchband slipped...bastards. But yeah my Mom didn't see it for three years.
 
It was kind of freeing. We were at my niece's wedding and the dancing n' it got warm. Both my shoulders are inked, I took off my shrug and went back to the dance floor. Our PA relatives started to leave like lemmings. Probably more the DJ playing Pit Bull than my body art...but it felt good!

Just pierced ears, 2 in each ear, with no desire for anything more, which would probably look silly on me anyway. Actually I don't like tattoos and piercings on older people.
 
I have one piercing in each ear. No tatts. I like mutiple ear peircings on girls but my earlobe piercings sometimes get oozy and infected so I have to bathe them in a sea salt bath which is inconvenient. I think rows of piercings around the cartilage part of the ear is really pretty but I'm too old for that and worry about infections so I pass.
Facial piercings I do not get. You'd be left with a permanent icepick scar or worse if you change your mind about piercings one day. More money to the plastic surgeon to fix it. :eek:
 
Just pierced ears. And believe it or not, I did them myself with a pair of piercing earrings I borrowed from my aunt. Very little pain at all actually.

I had mine done by my 16 year old sis in law when I was about 25. She used ice cubes and a bar of soap. It did hurt but she did them perfectly.
 
Best buddy had a belly ring for a few years. After helping him clean infection there and his multi ear holes, just no. Besides I will never have a bikini belly, not something I'ma gonna show off. Nose rings can be cute, ditto a rhinestone chip. The bull ring like FKA Twigs is a bit unsettling but if you're young enough you can rock it. The Lenny Kravitz video still disturbs me however.
 
I never understood why people would inflict pain on themselves putting permanent marks on their bodies that they may tire of or worse yet may turn away others that they might want to impress at some time in the future. Having said that, I know several highly intelligent and wonderful women who have small butterflies or flowers on an ankle or shoulder that are attractive. I personally don't let tattoos stand in the way of getting to know people. I just don't think its ever a good idea to narrow your options in any area of life.
 
Ice and a needle ouch, the piercing gun they use now is quick but still no fun. I dunno tattoos don't really hurt like that. I remember the only one that involved a bit of pain was a portrait of Sophie on my shoulder. It took hours for the shading and a week to heal. But it's a lifetime photo of my girl. I like tats that have been thought out. Some folks have body art you just know they'll regret someday.

I mean something violent that you think is cool as a teen or a taco that seems funny at the time...not a good idea...ditto for phrases not in your native tongue, you want to make sure you know exactly what it says. Oh one more thing I would tell young people, do a spell check. It would be embarrassing to have a permanent typo.

Gauging is something I totally don't understand. My son said that some people do cheeks too. In any case if they get removed it would take plastic surgery to fix the damage. For those who don't know the term it means disks in your ears that you gradually add so your lobes stretch. For cheeks, someone modifying their face so you can see their teeth...NOOOOO

I ran a needle and thread through alcohol and then just stuck it through my ear. Then I put vaseline on the thread to keep it from sticking once it was done. It never got infected or anything. Everything went fine. I was staying at my Aunt & Uncle's house at the time & when I forgot and pulled my hair behind my ear...my uncle was livid. I wasn't allowed to pierce my ears :p

:yougogirl:I did it just because I got sick of clip-on earrings always falling off and pinching, and it was too much trouble and unnecessary expense to bother my parents with at the time.
 
I snuck into the mall piercing place when I was fourteen. My Mom wasn't pleased but she let me keep them in anyway.
