Any significance to "Apizza"?

That's how it was always spelled. But Italian immigrants began dropping vowels from the end of words, so pizza began to be pronounced "Ah-beetz". You'd have to live in an area very highly populated by Italians, as I was fortunate to have done.

This docu is long, but interesting I think.

Thanks, Rose. By the way, my maternal grandma was Italian-Swiss. Since she was born & grew up here, she didn't have a trace of an Italian accent. But I know what you mean about Italian immigrants habitually putting a vowel (especially a) at the end of words.

No, I didn't mean putting a vowel at the end of a word...altho' they do that too. (Ima tella you...)

What I said was dropping the vowel at the end of a word -
mozzarella - mozzarell
ricotta - ricott
parmigiana - parmigian
apizza - ah-beetz LOL

As a kid living in Newark New Jersey's Little Italy neighborhood, I had an Italian friend invite me repeatedly to have dinner to eat Tomato Pie at his parents' apartment. I instinctively recoiled because I imagined a traditional American pie stuffed with tomatoes instead of apples. He kept telling me it was delicious but all I could do was recoil. Later, I found out that what he had been referring to was pizza!

Looks like a good pie. Char on the crust. I had a Jersey tomato pie many years ago when visiting my cousin in Newark. Delicious.
