Plants Missing

Last week I had some houseplants for sale on Facebook. A woman said she would take them all and sent her son to get them and instead of coming to the front door, he came to the back door. I also have plants in the back yard near the door. I thought he would come to the front door as most people do and I had the plants for sale on the front porch. When I went to water the ones out back today, half of them were gone. I can only assume that when he came to the back door, he saw the ones in the back yard and assumed that they were included.

This online selling isn't going very well for me. Someone PMed me about an item and we made an appointment for her to come and get it. She PMed me three times to confirm the date, then didn't show up after I had arranged my day to accommodate her.

Do they have any Flea markets in your area that you could possibly sell stuff to either the vendors themselves or man a table or share a table with someone else to sell to the customers?

The antique shows and flea markets around here charge to set up, and I can't hope to make enough to break even. Plus having to lug the merchandise there and back and packing and unpacking the car. That would be even more of a hassle. I tried selling in a consignment setting a few years ago at a church. They got 60% and the seller got 40% of the selling price. They didn't sell one item I gave them. Vendors ar looking for high end items.

I know exactly what you mean about online selling. I hate it but don't know what other avenue to use to sell things. I tried selling an antique dining table, chairs and sideboard on ebay and Craigslist. I did get a couple of texts from Craigslist but they looked dicey to me, wanting me to give them my paypal # and such. I asked them if they were local, since this was supposed to be a local pick up but never heard back from them. Now I see I have a couple voice messages and it wants me to download an app. Ugh!

Maybe just go through the local newspaper?

Do you have a "Nextdoor" in your area? Seems a lot of people on there offer up stuff to sell or give away to their "neighbors", even the stray cats and dogs seem to get snapped up.

My nephew has been able to get rid of several things for me on an app called Letgo. I split the money I get, halving it with him for his time. And I get the item out of my house/garage. Win-Win. I had an old riding lawnmower that no longer worked. He sold it for $300. Don't ask me how he does it, but he could probably sell ice cream to eskimos. I've used Nextdoor a few times and have sold a few things. Also, Facebook has a marketplace for areas in and around towns and cities. I can't remember what it's called.

I used Freecycle a lot when we were downsizing, prior to moving back east. My late husband was a stained glass artist, and he had a lot of glass and other art supplies that he was no longer able to use. We advertised on Freecycle, and an interesting woman arrived with a truck. She said she was also a stained glass artist and seemed delighted to get the stuff. The interesting thing was that she had a horse in the back of the truck! (She lived out in the country, of course. I don't remember if she mentioned what the horse was doing in the truck.)

We got rid of a lot of other things that way, also. It's always a nice feeling to give stuff away to people who specifically want that thing, rather than just having it go to Goodwill, where you don't know if anyone will ever get it.

I use freecycle also to give away things. Just google it for your city. It is free to use.
Thanks for the info Terry...will look them up. Got a friend cleaning out her stowage container from the previous home they owned. She's got some good stuff, too!

Are these cell phone apps? I don't have a cell phone.
No. They're websites.

I don't know if you have SF signatures turned on or off, but for a while mine has been:
"In life you either get what you want or the reasons why you don't have it."

Deb, I invite you to think about how you want, truly want, to live. Do you want an uncluttered home that is easy to navigate, keep clean and get repaired?

Or do you want the reasons why you don't have that? (Nobody will pay me what my treasures are worth. I'd feel guilty trashing or donating things that my parents or I paid good money in decades past. What if I need this someday?) Do you enjoy holding yard sales and waiting for people who don't show, come late, or speak insultingly about your possessions?

As I see it, wringing a few dollars from assorted items keeps you stuck, just as a gambler on a losing streak is encouraged by the occasional winning hand.

Only you can answer the question. Do you have what you want, or will you stick with with the reasons why not?

Well put, Star. Your note reminded me of a comment I once heard at a garage sale: "Old people always think their stuff is worth more than it is."

Maybe there is something missing. I've noticed that Debodun posts a lot about selling stuff that I would have either donated to charity or just throw out. Could it be selling & posting here is a way of social interaction that may be missing in her life?

If so I apologize for any negative comments I may have posted replying to her.

Perhaps so.

I agree. I didn’t mean anything insulting at all by mentioning OCD. It’s a really difficult thing to deal with at times. I know cause I have it and I can get seriously obsessed with some stuff and she seems somewhat obsessed with this yet it doesn’t seem to be making her happy.

I’m with starsong; you either get what you want in life or deal with all the excuses why you don’t.
