Other sources are reporting the 55 year old woman lost both hands.

Shark attacks tourist off Caribbean island when she pursues it for photo, cops say

Mark PriceMcClatchy News Service
A tourist visiting the Caribbean had to be flown to a hospital after she was attacked while trying to “engage” with a shark for a photo, according to investigators.
It happened Friday, Feb. 7, off a beach in the Turks and Caicos Islands, 600 miles southeast of Miami, and the woman is expected to survive. Her identity has not been released.
“The shark was estimated to be approximately 6ft in length, however the species is yet to be confirmed,” the Turks & Caicos Islands Government said in a Feb. 12 news release.
“It has been determined that the tourist had attempted to engage with the animal from the shallows in an attempt to take photographs.”
The Sun news outlet reports the 55-year-old woman was attacked around 10:30 a.m. and a photo shows the injuries were to one of her legs. It happened near the Blue Hills settlement, on the north side of Providenciales, the nation’s main island.
Out of caution, government officials closed the beach until midday Sunday, Feb. 9, “after it was determined that the shark had moved to deeper water.”

At first I thought this was an official shark dive when I first heard the story but it seems she was snorkeling on her own or if shallow water just jumped in.

I've been on shark dives and there is an experienced crew not just divers but they are familiar with the wild life. Doesn't seem like the case here.

Hey, she's joined a well-publicized club. How about the other people who have been injured or killed by going right up to a bear for a photo in one of our national parks? Or jumping into the water at one of our boiling hot natural springs, ignoring the signs that clearly say, "Warning: water is boiling hot. Do not enter the water."? Or swimming in alligator-infested waters?

Not to mention the geniuses who refuse to get vaccinated during pandemics. There's no shortage of stupidity.

She was on the beach, saw the shark, entered the water to try to get a selfie with it. By 'engaging' I'm guessing she was flapping her now lost hands around.

Here's an update:

Shark bites off tourist’s hands as she tries to take selfie on Caribbean beach

A shark bit the hands off a woman along the shore of a Caribbean beach while she was trying to take a picture with it.

The 55-year-old woman, who is understood to be Canadian, had only strayed a few yards into the water when she was attacked last Friday.

According to the local authorities she “attempted to engage” with the shark when the 6ft-long predatory fish struck off Thompson Cove Beach in the Turks and Caicos Islands.

It is understood she had one of her arms amputated below the wrist and the other half way up her forearm. She has since returned to Canada for further treatment.

Most shark attacks happen in relatively shallow waters - 10 feet to 30 feet.

This is the effects of social media on people. It makes people do really stupid things.

I saw a video ages ago of a Chinese woman trying to eat a live octopus. The octopus put its suckers on her face and gripped hard. The woman started screaming in agony.

And all for some clicks, likes or a thumbs up. How ridiculous.

That's what I was thinking because I rarely if ever heard of one those organized or formal shark dives or experiences have issues.

Did she run off the beach or jump off aa water board or something. Even then it was probably her approaching and messing with it.

And kids can be brutal, they'll probably start calling her 'the dumb hook hand selfie shark lady'

She'll probably get some sort of bionic prosthesis for the arm that still has part of the wrist. Not sure about the one that's gone halfway up her forearm. Both are doable, just depends how much the Canadian government wants to pay. Her best bet is to try to get accepted into a research program.

If she was in the U.S. with little or no insurance, she would just get a medical bill and some pain pills.
