Pokin' fun at yogis

Yoga's drive me nuts. They don't realize not everybody is a 22 year old, petit, supple woman who can bend themselves into a pretzel at will. Further more, they don't realize some of us have to LEARN THE BASIC POSES before we can go forward.

If your potential yoga instructor tells you that "With my methods I can teach anybody from beginners to advanced students in one class" run away as fast as you can.

I've learned to choose Yoga classes that are led by teachers that are closer to my age, although I do have a couple younger Yogis that understand and advocate the concept of "modify as needed for your own bodies needs".

My yoga instructor was older than I and really cool. She is now retired at 90 and is involved in Canines for Kids. (Just a shout out for a special senior). I kept it up until I had a hard time getting up off the mat. Then I switched to water aerobics and now chair yoga when I'm able.

Ah, the things you do for love. I attended a Yoga class with my ex. I can't say I felt serenity, truth, or enlightenment. I thought the drills I did in Navy boot camp at least were made for a human body. My ex just gushed about the class. Neither of us mentioned going to another class.

John McAfee, the crazy computer guy that started McAfee antivirus believed in observational yoga, which is where you sit and watch others do it. This can be done in person or by a video. He believed that you could absorb the benefits from the people doing it if you really believed. I tried it and it seems fine.

When I was in Army Basic Training we would stop and do all sorts of calisthenics at the whim of the DI. Some of the drills we did(clothed in fatigues and combat boots) resembled some of the positions we get into, in Yoga class.
