Poor Man's Surf and Turf

That's more luxurious that what I've seen. One time my mom and I were dining out and she ordered it thinking it would be just a smaller portion of the traditional meal. When it arrived it was a plain hot dog and a scoop of tuna salad. She was furious, but I supposed she could have asked if she wasn't sure.

That same place once had an all you can eat salad bar. Now to me "all you can eat" means go up as many times as you like. After my third trip, the manager came over and said "I think you've had enough. Do go back up again." I brought to his attenion the sign on the salad table that indicated "ALL YOU CAN EAT". He replied, "That means within reason." The next time I went, the salad bar was no longer offered.
BTW - that restaurant is now OOB.

Deb, your anecdote about the hot dog & tuna salad is a howl! That's as "poor man" as one could get, LOL.

Out here in the San Francisco Bay Area, everybody is very conscious of the uptick in ba.5 infections. Buffets closed down 2 yrs ago across the board, and I doubt they will be coming back any time soon. Even small Indian restaurants that made most of their income from lunchtime buffets, stopped doing them.

There is a Taiwan-based bakery chain which has quite a few bakery/cafes in CA. They are 'cafeteria-style': when you arrive, you pick up a tray and a pair of disposable tongs. All goods are neatly arranged and labeled so that everyone follows the same path up and down. Then you end at the cashier, order any drinks you want, and pay. Sit down or to go.

Everything is packaged so no worries about some buyer ahead of you handling a pastry and then changing their mind and putting it back, or sneezing/coughing on anything.

To me, poor man's lobster has always meant monk fish. It has the same consistency as lobster and the taste is similar. As far as the turf part, probably a ground sirloin patty?

Around here it means steak & lobster.
To me too. Anything else is just riding the coat tails of the luxury dinner. But it ain't the same. Come to think of it, it may be 30 years since I last ordered surf and turf. I sure enjoyed it back then, but now it seems like an unnecessary act of decadent gluttony in the spirit of the old Roman aristocracy.

That was for sure a poor poor man! I miss the good salad bars that are scarce now a days!
