Pope Francis has died

I liked him immensely but he was indoctrinated as many of us are - catholic ; protestant ; church of God ; Church of Christ [there's a good name at last] Baptists ; Methodists - did he [the big yun say right at the beginning " go forth and make up your own styles of my religion - christs religion - christianity ?? heh heh??

They need to get someone younger and more openminded. The Catholic Church needs to come into the 21st Century.
More open minded? Pope Francis was quite progressive in his thinking. In fact, one reporter noted that although he picked 80% of the cardinals, there's no guarantee the next pope will be as progressive as he was. Pope Francis allowed priests to bless same sex marriages. His views on LGBT:
"While Pope Francis maintained the Vatican's position that homosexual acts were sinful, he said gay people should not be marginalised from the Church, adding: "Who am I to judge?" To keep things in context, he also pointed out that mistreatment of others is a sin.
Pope Francis was game-changer, says London LGBT Catholic group

He spoke out against what's happening to Palestinians, although that brought criticism and this Pope did his own thing. He did not wear the red robes, he did not stay at the Vatican's mansion, he did not wash the cardinals' feet, but washed the feet of those who were imprisoned. He was a humble man who was called "the People's Pope". I really liked Pope Francis (couldn't stand his predecessor). Although he was very ill, his death came as a shock. I just saw him on that balcony overseeing the Easter proceedings. May he be rewarded for his great deeds and may he Rest in Paradise.

Pope Francis kind of politicized his position as Pope. I agreed with some of his tenets, but not all of them. I believe he may have been too kind of a man and was hoping to turn the world into a Utopian society. Maybe I am overstating my thoughts about his position on certain topics.

Maybe you are. I think he just wanted us as human beings to be decent, to treat each other with respect, no matter our differences. I don't think that's too much to ask of us as humans. Perhaps we've gotten too used to mistreatment of others and abuse of power as the norm in todays world. If that is the case, then it's a damned shame!

Conclave is a movie.
Right? The movie was exactly correct as to how a Pope is selected.
Popes are selected by a conclave wherein Cardinals vote by secret ballot until a two-thirds majority is reached.

Of course the movie was fiction as to the views and various scandals of it's Cardinal characters.

OneEyedDiva and BorntoLose have just expressed very well the two dominant views in the Catholic church at this time.
One view wants the church to move into the 21st century with a more liberal social stance and the other view wants the church to maintain it's timeless characteristics and refuse to change to suit popular opinions.

I loved having a well acted adult movie to watch, but I wish it had gone deeper into the positive aspects of both viewpoints, instead of swaying the audience by placing one viewpoint on a dislikable character.

That's good to hear! Hollywood usually gets anything Catholic-related (e.g., sacraments) wrong. I'd been avoiding Conclave just for that reason, but maybe I'll give it a try.

I am watching Conclave right now....just started so no opinions yet. There was a movie back in the 60s called Shoes of the Fisherman . Same deal...but in this movie the controversy came when they chose the first non Italian Pope. And he was a Russian too boot...back when we were not getting along with them.

Sorry, but the Catholic Church continues to lose membership. Pope Francis was a great leader in that he eschewed wealth and was a champion for the common man. However, his support for the gay community was weak at best. He even used a vulgar term about gay men in the Priesthood.

Maybe I'm being overly sensitive, but aside from my lifestyle it still doesn't address how the Catholic church remedies the fact that it is bleeding members.

Thank you for sharing your feelings @Elsie but I don't need the judgment of others to know whether or not I'm a decent person. I respect your opinion based on your religious beliefs but we can agree to disagree.
